In my perfect universe, the left and right would come together
to form a new party based on a narrow agenda of shared values.

The Tea Party folks now backing Trump and the Occupy Wall Street
left now backing Sanders would find a way to unite to throw out the
establishment politicos of both major parties whom they equally loathe.
As things now stand, that ain’t gonna happen! Even though there is
much to gain from everyone calming down and seeing the wisdom
of cooperating on the few key issues, as they share the desire to avoid
the chaos of divide and conquer, recent developments demonstrate
that idea is a Scheckian pipe-dream.
Trump is doing his part by wrecking the Republican Party and Sanders
is close to accomplishing that with his successes in the Democratic
primaries.
But if he falls short and Hillary captures the nomination, it will have
all been for naught. Likewise, if Trump is denied at the convention
what he earned at the polls, that revolt will have failed, too.
Then the real revolution will begin where everyone will be very upset
with no hope of any change in the foreseeable future. Even if one of
these outliers is somehow able to prevail and capture the presidency,
other than channeling a lot of frustration, the prospect of ending the
domination of the Banksters and the Military Industrial Complex using
the ballot box may be delusional.

Having said all that, there is a real difference between those backing
Sanders, who want more government, and those enthusiastic about
Trump, who want less.
The Trump gang reviles government for intruding too much in their
lives and wants it to go away:

Most of Sanders followers want government to do more for them in
terms of education, health care and job creation. Even though the
historical record of Socialism is quite dubious, they still want the
State to play a bigger role.
As an old lefty, I certainly understand the feelings of those sick of
corporate greed who want to have the government regulate the
excesses of capitalism and ensure fairness.

But as a quasi-libertarian who has come to dread anything governmental
because I associate the word with “legalized” killing and stealing, I am more
comfortable with the less-is-better approach………..at least for now.
In a year of horrible choices, with my main focus remaining on
the need for the US to stop attacking other countries, I pray a
way can be found—no matter who wins—to see that happen.
