Imran Awan, the I.T. aide of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., has been indicted on four counts, including bank fraud and making false statements, according to a Fox News report Thursday.

Awan and his wife, Hina Alvi, have been indicted by U.S. District Court grand jury in Washington, D.C., nearly a month after being arrested at Virginia’s Dulles Airport trying to board a flight back to his home in Pakistan.

Wasserman Schultz, who resigned as Democratic National Committee chairwoman amid the WikiLeaks email controversy, has been criticized for continuing to pay Awan, 37, for six months after he had been fired by Congress and banned from the House of Representatives’ IT network.

She was forced to fire Awan in July, but only after he had been arrested after an investigation for mortgage fraud.

Among the allegations, Awan and his wife, naturalized American citizens from Pakistan, wired $283,000 to Pakistan in January, including $165,000 from the home equity line of credit, according to court documents as reported by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Amid criticism of her ties to Awans, Wasserman Schultz ripped the “right-wing media circus fringe” for the negative publicity as a cover-up for the FBI’s investigation in Russia meddling in the 2016 election.

“Any opportunity they can to pull people’s eyes and ears away from that they take,” she told the Sun-Sentinel.

“. . . The right-wing media circus fringe has immediately focused not on this run-of-the-mill investigation just reporting the facts, but jumped to outrageous, egregious conclusions that they were trying to, that they have ties to terrorists, and that they were stealing data.”
