Senate Democrats “should be ashamed of themselves,” President Donald Trump said Tuesday morning, over the relatively slow pace with which his cabinet nominees have been confirmed.
“When will the Democrats give us our Attorney General and rest of Cabinet! They should be ashamed of themselves! No wonder D.C. doesn’t work!” the president wrote on Twitter on Tuesday morning.
Trump was forced to fire acting Attorney General Sally Yates late Monday after she publicly announced that under her leadership, the Department of Justice would not defend the president’s executive order that restricts individuals from certain majority-Muslim nations from entering the U.S. Yates was replaced by Dana Boente, the U.S. Attorney in Alexandria, Va.
The president’s pick to be the next attorney general, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), has come under heavy scrutiny over civil rights issues in the weeks since Trump announced his nomination. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus, including Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) testified against Sessions before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Booker was the first sitting senator to testify against another sitting senator nominated to a cabinet post.
Beyond Trump’s pick to lead the Justice Department, the White House has complained almost daily about the pace at which Democrats have been willing to approve cabinet picks. The topic regularly comes up during daily press briefings and on Monday, the White House issued a press release comparing the confirmation dates of initial cabinet members for former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush to Trump’s.
