Hillary Clinton: Fake News Is ‘A Danger That Must Be Addressed’
by Josh Feldman
There’s been a lot of talk about fake news over the past few weeks and whether it had any impact on the election. Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg have both dismissed the idea that fake news on Facebook swayed the election. The Comet Ping Pong gunman this week fueled discussion about real-world consequences of fake news.
Well, now Hillary Clinton has weighed in, bringing up the issue during her speech at Harry Reid‘s portrait unveiling.
She said, “It’s now clear that so-called fake news can have real world consequences. This isn’t about politics or partisanship. Lives are at risk.”
Clinton did not directly address the election, but railed against the “epidemic of malicious fake news and false propaganda that flooded social media over the past year” and called for action to be taken:
“It’s a danger that must be addressed, and addressed quickly. Bipartisan legislation is making its way through Congress to boost the government’s response to foreign propaganda, and Silicon Valley is starting to grapple with the challenge and threat of fake news.”
