Bernie Sanders had a real chance to become president. Had he
been willing to step up from the beginning and go after Hillary Clinton
in the aggressive manner that The Donald is using, he may have
already dispatched her to the sidelines despite her big advantages.
Trump is ripping Hillary apart! He is making her look weak and stupid.
He is doing Bernie Sanders work for him! But it may be too little, too
late to save his candidacy despite his late surge against Hillary.
The likelihood that Bernie will be able to get Super Delegates to vote
for him at this late date even though he is doing extremely well in the
primaries is slim.
Even if the polls show him doing better against Trump in November,
these are the hard-core cadre of Clinton loyalists that will almost
definitely stay with their benefactor rather than do what is best for the
Democratic Party.
By contrast, Trump is having a field day going after Hillary on so many
issues: her horrible record as Secretary of State; the criminal
investigation of her private e-mail server; her husband’s sexual history;
her responsibility for Libya and Syria; her many other scandals and
her trouble defeating the relatively weak Sanders.
Yup: he could have been more than a contender. But if he loses the
nomination fight, many of his followers will line up behind Trump as the
best way to thumb their noses at the establishment because Hillary is
far more a symbol of all they hate than The Donald is.
Despite all his many weaknesses, he more than anyone in the race has
captured the full angst of the American electorate. Bernie may have
squandered the natural advantage of the Democratic Party in the general
election by his failure to embrace an anti-war agenda, something Trump
has done effectively against Jeb Bush and Hillary.
Stay tuned folks: we are a long way from seeing how this plays out.
