Newt: Mueller Probe ‘Totally Screwed Up,’ One-Sided ‘Witch Hunt’

Independent counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into possible Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election is “totally screwed up” and a “witch hunt” against President Donald Trump’s administration, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday.
“It is so one-sided and it is such a witch hunt that I’m totally sympathetic to the Trump position,” Gingrich told Martha McCallum, host of Fox News Channel’s “The Story.”
Gingrich, echoing a tweet from the president earlier Monday,suggested the investigation ought to focus more on the Clinton Foundation and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s 33,000 deleted emails from her private server that she used for government business as secretary of state.
“You want to talk about Russia involvement, then start with the Clinton Foundation,” Gingrich said.
He also suggested Republicans ask Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein what supposed crime Mueller is investigating.
“I think the people that Mueller has hired are bad people, and I think the president has every right to be angry,” Gingrich said.
Still, Gingrich said, Trump should go easy on Sessions, who many observers believe could be on the chopping block for recusing himself from the Russia probe, thus setting up the independent counsel probe.
Sessions was the first senator to endorse Trump when it was very unpopular to do so, and stuck with him when he was 10 points down, Gingrich said.
“Jeff Sessions has been loyal all the way through,” he said. “You can make a case he shouldn’t have recused himself, the president feels that way, but when you look at Jeff’s overall contribution, and you look at the work they’re doing cooperating with homeland security on rolling up MS-13 gangs all over America, you look at what Jeff is doing taking on sanctuary cities and the liberal mayors who refuse to protect their citizens from criminals, there’s a lot of good in Jeff Sessions.
“I think it would be a big mistake for the president to in any way do anything except move forward with him.”
