President Donald Trump believes it’s best to let his “warfighters” fight the wars, but he is very involved in the decision making process, according to White House chief strategist Steve Bannon.

“He hasn’t given up any of the strategic decisions,” Bannon told CNN. Also, he said Trump has held onto his authority to oversee “anything important on the warfighting side.”

According to the CNN report, Trump has been breaking away from the oversight levels carried out by both Democratic and Republican administrations in the past,

He took a significant step earlier this month, when he allowed Defense Secretary James Mattis, who is a recently retired four-star general, to determine troop levels in Afghanistan.

Mattis will only be able to act within the guidelines of current U.S. strategy, but still, he can send in thousands more troops without Trump signing off on his order, marking the first time that has happened in the war’s 16-year history.

The new strategy is reversing policies employed by the Obama and George W. Bush’s administrations that critics said hampered commanders’ decisions and military campaigns.

However, Kori Schake, Bush’s National Security Council director for defense strategy, said that may mean Trump won’t be held to the same standards of accountability when it comes to the military.

“It’s really important for the President to take responsibility for outcome and have a conversation with the American people that prepares people for both what we’re trying to do and the sacrifices that will be required to do it,” Schake told CNN.
