The Hill: Wasserman Schultz Questions Comey About DNC Hack in Meeting

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz asked FBI Director James Comey about the bureau’s investigation into the Democratic National Committee being hacked during a closed-door meeting Friday, and that led to more finger-pointing at the law enforcement official.

According to The Hill, Wasserman Schultz — who was once the head of the DNC before she resigned last summer in the wake of hacked emails made public that showed she favored Hillary Clinton in the presidential race — confronted Comey about how his agency communicated to the DNC it had been hacked.

Comey, according to the report, replied by saying the FBI notified the DNC about evidence that pointed to the organization’s computer system being compromised.

“Essentially Debbie asked, how was it that the FBI knew that the DNC was being hacked and they didn’t tell her?” one Democrat told The Hill. “He gave some [expletive] explanation, ‘That’s our standard, we called this one, we called that one’ — [Wasserman Schultz said,] ‘Well, why didn’t you call me?'”

The Hill notes that an FBI agent contacted the DNC after the hack was discovered but the organization did not know if the call was legitimate or a prank. The bureau continued to call the DNC over several weeks but did not receive a response.

Another Democrat in Friday’s meeting told Comey, according to The Hill, “You let us down!”

A separate FBI investigation into Democratic presidential nominee Clinton resulted in no charges being filed, which Comey announced in July. Eleven days before the Nov. 8 election, however, Comey said he was taking a second look at the case after new evidence came to light.

That second look also resulted in no charges being filed against Clinton, but many Democrats believe it was enough to sway voters’ opinions over to Republican Donald Trump, who won the election handily.

Many have called for Comey to resign from his Post as the head of the FBI, including The Wall Street Journal.

The Justice Department has opened an investigation into Comey’s actions to determine whether he followed protocol in the Clinton probe.
