The Deepening Crisis of World Capitalism and Western Civilization

Patrick Martin has eloquently captured the spectacle of the “debate”
between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump on Monday.

What is totally clear from a careful analysis of what was said and
the overall condition of the American Republic is that neither candidate
really has a clue what to do to stop the rapid erosion of our economic
and political situation and that neither person really cares a whit for
the people of this country.

This is a game to them, the culmination of their previous life’s work
and an opportunity to take the next step on their career paths rather
than it being a deep exercise in restoring America to its heritage of
liberty and personal freedom.

Whoever wins the election—if indeed one is held in six weeks, will
face a series of problems so overwhelming and so unique in their
complexity, that it is highly unlikely they will be able to govern much
less make any progress with the issues they inherit.

This bleak assessment comes after years of watching our nation
continue its endless wars and imperial over-reach as the main prop
for a faltering economic system, what Martin describes as the
“deepening crisis of world capitalism!”

This is a very tragic situation: not only has America destroyed the
lives of countless millions of innocent people, it is now faced with the
high prospect that the Empire is set to implode and spread the pain to
the its own citizens who had benefited from its plundering ways.

That is what Sanders and Trump represented during this election cycle:
an inchoate attempt to give voice to the country’s disaffected. But neither
was overtly anti-war or anti-Empire.  Sanders the Socialist
promoted the
F-35 (built in Vermont) and paid lip-service to being the
peace candidate.

Trump at times seemed interested in working with Russia to diffuse
world tensions and promote peace. By calling for dramatic increases
in military spending and unflinching war against ISIS without indicating
that it was essentially an invention and tool of the West, he emerges
as another hawk mindlessly ready to do battle.

As Martin states, the election is essentially meaningless other than to
confirm that for the immediate future, nothing will change. Should
Hillary prevail to become the first woman president, that will be the
equivalent of Obama being the first black person to inhabit the White
House: a perfect continuation of the same failed policies and the
status quo with only the skin color or gender changing.

It remains to be seen how much longer those in power can
perpetuate the charade of normalcy as the crisis deepens and all of
Western Civilization is faced with collapse
in the days ahead!
