Democrats pushing abortion up to, and after, moment of birth

New York’s new abortion law is emboldening agents of the Culture of Death. On Tuesday, Virginia lawmaker Kathy Tran (D) put forward a proposal to dramatically weaken the commonwealth’s pro-life laws. Though the bill failed to advance, observers note it signals a growing radicalism among Democrats.
Under current Virginia law, a woman can obtain a third-trimester abortion only if three doctors agree that continuing the pregnancy would “substantially and irremediably impair” her mental or physical health.
In addition to repealing several other hard-won pro-life provisions, Tran’s bill would have struck the term “substantially and irremediably” from the books and reduced the number of doctors needed to sign off on a late-term abortion from three to one.
This means that after consulting a single abortionist, a woman would be able to abort her baby up to the moment of birth for reasons of “mental health.”
In testimony before a state legislative committee Tuesday, Tran was pressed by a Republican colleague on the gravity of her proposal; she confirmed that her bill would allow a dilating woman to kill her child.
On Wednesday, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam was asked about the bill. Northam, a former pediatric neurologist, backed Tran, and went on to describe what would happen if a baby survived an intended abortion, saying “the infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”
Critics lashed out, noting Northam — a recipient of millions of dollars in Planned Parenthood campaign donations — had, in effect, endorsed infanticide for newborn abortion survivors.
Events in New York, Virginia and other states reflect the “Culture of Death” Pope John Paul II prophesied in his 1995 encyclical Evangelium Vitae. Any society embracing contraception, he warned, will embrace abortion, then infanticide and, finally, euthanasia.
