Obama DOJ Made &#8220;Dramatic&#8221; Call To McCabe To Quash Clinton Probe<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->ZeroHedge.com<\/p>\n<p>As the FBI&#8217;s investigation into the Clinton Foundation pressed on during the 2016 election, a\u00a0senior official with the Obama justice department, identified as Matthew Axelrod, called former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe &#8211; who thought the DOJ was pressuring him to shut down the investigation, according to the recently released inspector general&#8217;s (OIG) report.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The official was \u201cvery pissed off\u201d at the FBI<\/strong>, the report says, and demanded to know why the FBI was still pursuing the Clinton Foundation when the Justice Department considered the case dormant. &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2018\/apr\/23\/justice-departments-attempts-influence-investigati\/\"><em>Washington Times<\/em><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/Matthew-Axelrod-Article-201703131916.jpg?itok=0zWwhvD1\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/Matthew-Axelrod-Article-201703131916.jpg?itok=0zWwhvD1\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/Matthew-Axelrod-Article-201703131916.jpg\" srcset=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/Matthew-Axelrod-Article-201703131916.jpg?itok=0zWwhvD1 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"277\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"06f4a145-b5d6-4eaa-b1a5-15b0c6384cbd\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Matthew-Axelrod-Article-201703131916.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-98574\" src=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Matthew-Axelrod-Article-201703131916.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"666\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Matthew-Axelrod-Article-201703131916.jpg 666w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Matthew-Axelrod-Article-201703131916-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The OIG issued a criminal referral for McCabe based on findings that the former Deputy Director &#8220;made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor &#8211; including under oath &#8211; on multiple occasions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McCabe authorized a self-serving leak to the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0claiming that the FBI had\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0put the brakes on the Clinton Foundation investigation, during a period in which he was coming under fire over a\u00a0$467,500 campaign\u00a0donation his wife Jill took from Clinton pal Terry McAuliffe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>It is bizarre \u2014 and that word can\u2019t be used enough<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<strong>to have the Justice Department call the FBI\u2019s deputy director and try to influence the outcome of an active corruption investigation<\/strong>,\u201d\u00a0said James Wedick &#8211; a former FBI official who conducted corruption investigations at the bureau. \u201c<strong>They can have some input, but they shouldn\u2019t be operationally in control like it appears they were from this call<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wedick said he&#8217;s never fielded a call from the Justice Department about any of his cases during his 35 years there &#8211; which suggests an attempt at\u00a0<strong>interference by the Obama administration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2018\/apr\/23\/justice-departments-attempts-influence-investigati\/\"><em>Washington Times<\/em><\/a>\u00a0Jeff Mordock points out,\u00a0Although the inspector general\u2019s report did not identify the caller,\u00a0<strong>former FBI and Justice Department officials said it was Matthew Axelrod<\/strong>, who was the principal associate deputy attorney general \u2014 the title the IG report did use.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Mr. McCabe thought the call was out of bounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He told the inspector general that during the Aug. 12, 2016, call the principal associate deputy attorney general expressed concerns about FBI agents taking overt steps in the Clinton Foundation investigation during the presidential campaign. &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2018\/apr\/23\/justice-departments-attempts-influence-investigati\/\"><em>Washington Times<\/em><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAccording to McCabe, he pushed back, asking \u2018<strong>are you telling me that I need to shut down a validly predicated investigation?<\/strong>\u2019\u201d the report reads. \u201c<strong>McCabe told us that the conversation was \u2018very dramatic\u2019 and he never had a similar confrontation like the PADAG call with a high-level department official in his entire FBI career<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Inspector General said in a footnote that the Justice official (identified separately as Matthew Alexrod) agreed to the description of the call, but objected to seeing that &#8220;the Bureau was trying to spin this conversation as some evidence of political interference, which was totally unfair.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Axelrod quit the Justice Department on January 30, 2017, the same day his boss, Deputy AG Sally Q. Yates was fired by President Trump for failing to defend his travel ban executive order. He is now an attorney in the D.C. office of British law firm Linklaters LLP.<\/p>\n<p>Axelrod told the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0he left the department earlier than planned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>It was always anticipated that we would stay on for only a short period<\/strong>,\u201d said Alexrod of himself and Yates. \u201cFor the first week we managed, but the ban was a surprise.
