Trump first formerly proposed banning the modifications in February.<\/p>\n
\u201cSince the day he took office, President Trump has had no higher priority than the safety of each and every American,\u201d attorney general Jeff Sessions said in a statement accompanying Trump\u2019s announcement. \u201cThat is why today the Department of Justice is publishing for public comment a proposed rulemaking that would define \u2018machinegun\u2019 to include bump stock-type devices under federal law \u2014 effectively banning them.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the senseless attack in Las Vegas, this proposed rule is a critical step in our effort to reduce the threat of gun violence that is in keeping with the Constitution and the laws passed by Congress,\u201d Sessions continued. \u201cI look forward to working with the President\u2019s School Safety Commission to identify other ways to keep our country and our children safe, and I thank the President for his courageous leadership on this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bump stocks became a nationally polarized issue after Stephen Paddock\u2019s mass shooting in Las Vegas in October 2017.<\/p>\n
Paddock used bump stocks to convert several semi-automatic rifles into what the DOJ would now classify as \u201cmachine guns,\u201d which he used to kill 58 individuals near the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.<\/p>\n
