The\u00a0Austin<\/a>\u00a0bomber was involved in a teenage Christian \u201csurvivalist\u201d group that discussed weapons and dangerous chemicals, according to a childhood friend.<\/p>\n

Mark Anthony Conditt<\/a>\u00a0reportedly took part in a conservative outdoors club called Righteous Invasion of Truth (RIOT), in which home-schooled young people studied the Bible and were taught gun skills.<\/p>\n

Police in Texas are hunting for clues about what drove the 23-year-old to embark on a bombing spree which killed two people and terrorised the state capital for weeks.<\/p>\n

“He and and his family are as normal as I\u2019ve seen anybody,” Jeff Reeb, a neighbour of the Conditt\u00a0family in Pflugerville\u00a0for approximately 17 years, told\u00a0The Independent<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Another neighbour, Lee Roca, said he was shocked when he saw Conditt\u00a0identified as the bombing suspect on the news. Mr Roca said he recognised Conditt\u00a0from karaoke nights at a local bar called Red Rooster, and he may well have shaken his hand.<\/p>\n

Officers found a 25-minute mobile phone recording\u00a0that they said amounted to a \u201cconfession\u201d<\/a>\u00a0after Conditt blew himself up as authorities closed in on him on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Austin police chief Brian Manley said officers had\u00a0also found a \u201ctarget list\u201d of \u201cadditional addresses we believe he was using for future targets\u201d,\u00a0but nothing that gave any indication of a motive.<\/p>\n

Conditt is reported to have used to alias \u201cKelly Killmore\u201d on explosive packages he sent to victims.<\/p>\n

Former friends remembered Conditt as a \u201cpretty normal kid\u201d who was home-schooled by his \u201cconservative, strictly religious\u201d family in\u00a0Pflugerville.<\/p>\n

Conditt attended RIOT events with his younger sister, said Cassia Schultz, who was also involved in the group.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of us were very into science; we would discuss chemicals and how to mix them and which ones were dangerous,\u201d Ms Schultz\u00a0told\u00a0BuzzFeed News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old added: \u201cWe were into weapons and stuff. A lot of us did role-playing, and RPG [role-playing games]; we\u2019d have foam weapons and act out a battle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Schultz said many young people involved in RIOT carried knives and learned to shoot firearms at gun ranges, but she did not recall bomb-making being a topic of discussion.<\/p>\n

RIOT was set up and named by home-schooled children of high school age\u00a0in Pflugerville and their families. The group\u2019s events, which also included archery and water balloon fights, included up to an hour of Bible study.<\/p>\n

Ms Schulz said she had not seen Conditt for three or four years and was \u201ccompletely shocked\u201d to hear he was the bomber.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody has mentioned him being violent or anything like that,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Conditt is said to have used a fake name to mail five explosive packages to his targets, killing a 17-year-old boy and a 39-year-old man. Another bomb was left at the roadside attached to a tripwire.<\/p>\n

Five people were injured in the blasts, two of them critically.\u00a0The wounded included a FedEx employee at\u00a0sorting office in the city of San Antonio, about 100 miles from Austin.<\/p>\n

Conditt\u00a0was captured by CCTV\u00a0cameras wearing gloves and a wig as he dropped off two parcels at a FedEx delivery centre in Austin last week, and was also filmed shopping\u00a0for bomb materials including batteries and nails at a Home Depot shop.<\/p>\n

Conditt<\/span>\u00a0appeared to have only a modest social media presence and left few clues\u00a0about his motive online. Aside from a few photos of him on his family\u2019s Facebook pages, his online presence includes little more than an\u00a0online blog he created in 2012 as part of a government class project.<\/p>\n

In the post titled \u201cDefining my Stance\u201d he gives his opinion on several issues, often in response to commentary by someone else.\u00a0Conditt<\/span>\u00a0wrote that gay marriage should be illegal, argued in favour of the death penalty and gave his thoughts on \u201cwhy we might want to consider\u201d eliminating sex offender registries.<\/p>\n

Of gay marriage,\u00a0Conditt<\/span>\u00a0wrote: \u201cHomosexuality is not natural. Just look at the male and female bodies. They are obviously designed to couple.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the \u201cabout me\u201d section of the blog,\u00a0Conditt<\/span>\u00a0wrote that he was not\u00a0\u201dthat politically inclined,\u201d saying he viewed himself as conservative but did not have enough information\u00a0\u201dto defend my stance as well as it should be defended.\u201d He said he hoped the class would help him do that.<\/p>\n

A friend of\u00a0Conditt<\/span>\u00a0said he could be \u201cdominant and intimidating in conversation\u201d.\u00a0Jeremiah Jensen, 24, told the\u00a0Austin American-Statesman<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that he knew\u00a0Conditt<\/span>\u00a0through the home-schooled community in\u00a0Pflugerville\u00a0would go to his and home for lunch after church on Sundays. They also attended Bible study and other activities together.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I met Mark, he was really rough around the edges,\u201d Mr Jensen said. \u201cHe was a very assertive person and would…\u00a0end up being kind of dominant and intimidating in conversation. A lot of people didn\u2019t understand him and where he was coming from.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI have no idea what caused him to make those bombs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conditt\u2019s family said in a statement\u00a0they had \u201cno idea of the darkness that Mark must have been in\u201d. His grandmother said she was shocked to learn her grandson was being accused of the attacks, and called him a \u201cvery kind\u201d and \u201cloving person\u201d. She told CNN that\u00a0Conditt was a \u201cvery quiet and a deep thinker\u201d.<\/p>\n
