Immigration chief: 800 avoided arrest due to mayor\u2019s warning<\/h1>\n

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) \u2014 A federal immigration official says about 800 people living illegally in Northern California avoided being arrested because Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf warned that immigration raids were upcoming.<\/p>\n

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement chief Thomas Homan told \u201cFox and Friends\u201d Wednesday that Schaaf\u2019s action was \u201cno better than a gang lookout yelling \u2018police\u2019 when a police cruiser comes in the neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Homan says the Justice Department is looking into whether Schaaf obstructed justice.<\/p>\n

The mayor warned residents Saturday night of large-scale raids by immigration agents in the San Francisco Bay Area.<\/p>\n

The agency on Tuesday said that agents arrested more than 150 people in California after the mayor\u2019s warning in a sweep that covered cities from Sacramento to Stockton in California\u2019s Central Valley agricultural heartland.<\/p>\n
