The artist who painted former President Obama\u2019s portrait for the Portrait Gallery, part of the Smithsonian Institution, has an interesting past. While reviewing previous works by artist\u00a0Kehinde Wiley, it was\u00a0discovered that he has a great fondness for painting black women beheading white women. Both beheading pieces are titled \u201cJudith beheading Holofernes\u201d, referencing a story in the\u00a0Book of Judith<\/a>, which involves a beautiful woman who seduces an invading general before he is able to destroy their land, gets him drunk, and then decapitates him.<\/p>\n

Typical artists from the Rennaissance era have placed Judith in the role of a\u00a0scriptural savior,\u00a0\u201ca type of the praying Virgin or the church or as a figure who tramples Satan and harrows Hell.<\/a>\u201d Given the historical context and how Wiley recreated it in his works, is hard to interpret\u00a0his use of this theme as anything other than a blatant\u00a0statement of racism; black women are the powerful angels of the earth, conquering\u00a0the white devils.<\/p>\n

Can you imagine for a second if George W. Bush, or any other former president,\u00a0decided on a painter who was famous for depicting white people killing black people to paint his official\u00a0portrait? It\u2019s hard to imagine, right? Yea, that\u2019s because it\u2019s disgusting and backward.<\/p>\n

Users on Twitter expressed outrage at commissioning\u00a0an artist with such obvious racist leanings to paint the portrait of an American president:<\/p>\n
