Japanese shares were down about 7 percent at one point before ending 4.7 percent lower, while markets in Hong Kong and Taiwan closed down about 5 percent. The selling was broad, hitting companies of all sizes across industries. An index of Chinese companies listed in Hong Kong dropped more than 6 percent at one point.<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-1\">\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"297\" data-total-count=\"1029\">Market analysts digesting the numbers from Asia said they did not expect the selling to let up anytime soon. And Europe and the United States looked poised for similar selling.
