{"id":93176,"date":"2018-01-23T14:20:32","date_gmt":"2018-01-23T18:20:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=93176"},"modified":"2018-01-23T14:20:32","modified_gmt":"2018-01-23T18:20:32","slug":"sellout-schumer-shut-down-the-government-for-absolutely-nothing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=93176","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Sellout Schumer&#8217; Shut Down the Government For Absolutely Nothing"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>&#8220;Stupidest Damn Thing I&#8217;ve Ever Seen&#8221;: &#8216;Sellout Schumer&#8217; Under Fire For Shutdown Deal<\/h2>\n<p><!--more-->ZeroHedge.com<\/p>\n<p>Desperate proponent of the #TrumpShutdown hashtag, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck\u00a0<strong>Schumer is coming under fire from his own party<\/strong>\u00a0in the aftermath of a fight that shut down the government for three days and\u00a0<strong>left Democrats with nothing to show for it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/20180123_schumer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-93177\" src=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/20180123_schumer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/20180123_schumer.jpg 500w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/20180123_schumer-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/370209-schumer-comes-under-fire-over-funding-deal\">As The Hill reports,<\/a>\u00a0<strong>liberal groups were enraged by that decision<\/strong>, arguing Schumer didn\u2019t get enough to back down.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s official: Chuck Schumer is the worst negotiator in Washington \u2013 even worse than Trump,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>said Murshed Zaheed, political director at Credo, a progressive advocacy group.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe went in with a very weak set of cards, with [25] people up for re-election,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>said one Democratic senator, one of several lawmakers who requested anonymity to assess Schumer\u2019s performance frankly.<\/p>\n<p>Another Democratic senator said almost every local news channel he spoke to over the weekend began its interview with the same question, \u201c<strong>Why did Democrats shut down the government?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Frank Sharry, executive director of the liberal immigration advocacy organization, America&#8217;s Voice, added in a scathing statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLast week, I was moved to tears of joy when Democrats stood up and fought for progressive values and for Dreamers.\u00a0<strong>Today, I am moved to tears of disappointment and anger that Democrats blinked.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Republicans reveled in what they saw as a definite political win.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) called the shutdown\u00a0<strong>a \u201cmassive political blunder\u201d for Democrats,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0adding that McConnell had not changed his position on bringing an immigration bill to the floor \u201cat the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a moderate, called it<strong>a \u201cno-win\u201d situation for the other side.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Several Senate Democrats felt the same way,\u00a0<\/strong>pronouncing themselves disappointed with the deal Schumer accepted to end the shutdown.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s a great disappointment to me\u00a0<\/strong>and it\u2019s a great disappointment to the more than 300,000 DACA young people in the state of California,\u201d said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.).<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe strategy was to keep it fixed to a must-pass vehicle\u00a0<\/strong>because there was great worry that the House was not going to pass it,\u201d she said of any immigration legislation that might pass the Senate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI\u2019m just very disappointed,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) who had been in lockstep with Schumer throughout the shutdown, panned the deal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cI don\u2019t see that there\u2019s any reason \u2014 I\u2019m speaking personally and hearing from my members \u2014 to support what was put forth,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0she told reporters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A fourth Democratic senator, who requested anonymity, said his colleagues didn\u2019t want to prolong the standoff because they saw it as getting worse and worse.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThere was inexorable trajectory toward, \u2018Now my anxiety is officially high, it\u2019s a week later and what are we doing here?\u2019\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0the lawmaker said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, despite all the naysayers, there was one Democrat willing to defend Schumer&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Florida Rep.\u00a0<strong>Debbie Wasserman Schultz who went on CNN Monday afternoon to try to spin the Democrats&#8217; loss over the government shutdown<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/players.brightcove.net\/5107476400001\/B1xUkhW8i_default\/index.html?videoId=5716866817001\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/01\/22\/cnn-wasserman-schultz-shutdown\/\">Daily Caller&#8217;s Benny Johnson reports\u00a0<\/a>that when Schultz was asked point-blank what the point of the government shutdown was her response left Baldwin\u2019s jaw on the floor.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cWhat one thing did [Schumer] get, you know, from Republicans, to justify shutting down the government in the first place?\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Baldwin asked.<\/p>\n<p>DWS replied:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>\u201cThe one thing, I would say, that [Schumer] did get is the potential for momentum.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Baldwin looked stunned and asked if the \u201cpotential for momentum\u201d was \u201creally worth it to shut down the government?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wasserman Schultz responded,\u00a0<em>\u201cRepublicans should be asking that question because they shut it down.
