The sweep is in response to California&#8217;s new &#8220;sanctuary city&#8221; laws which took effect Jan 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important, given these rumors that are out there, to let people know \u2013 more specifically today, employers \u2013 that\u00a0<strong>if they voluntarily start giving up information about their employees or access to their employees in ways that contradict our new California laws, they subject themselves to actions by my office<\/strong>,\u201d said CA Attorney General Xavier Becerra, adding\u00a0\u201c<strong>We will prosecute those who violate the law<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Becerra&#8217;s warning follows a report by the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/Feds-planning-massive-Northern-California-12502689.php\">San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>detailing the planned raids which will\u00a0include worksites believed to be harboring illegal employees. According to\u00a0<em>The Chronicle<\/em>, US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will be flying officers in from around the country to assist with the raids, according to an unnamed source.<\/p>\n<p>As we wrote yesterday,\u00a0<strong>The sweep would be the largest of its kind under the Trump administration, a source told the\u00a0<em>Chronicle<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; and would be the first such operation since California Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation enacting statewide\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201720180SB54\">&#8220;sanctuary&#8221; laws<\/a>\u00a0last October\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; vastly limiting who state and local law enforcement agencies can detain, question and transfer at the request of federal authorities.\u00a0It also forbids police officers from making arrests for\u00a0civil immigration warrants, as well as joining federal task forces intended to enforce immigration laws.<\/p>\n<p>As far as businesses are concerned, the bill:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u25aa\u00a0Requires employers to ask immigration agents for a warrant before granting access to a worksite.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u25aa\u00a0Prevents employers from voluntarily sharing confidential employee information without a subpoena.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u25aa\u00a0Requires employers to notify their workers before a federal audit of employee records.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u25aa\u00a0Gives the attorney general and labor commissioner exclusive authority to enforce new provisions of state labor laws.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u25aa\u00a0Prohibits employers from re-verifying information on employment verification forms, unless compelled to by federal law.<\/p>\n<p>Acting ICE Director Homan slammed Jerry Brown and the state of California for passing SB54, which he said undermined public safety.<\/p>\n<p>(<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article195434409.html\">SacBee<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_92837\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/homan_0_0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92837\" class=\"size-full wp-image-92837\" src=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/homan_0_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/homan_0_0.jpg 500w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/homan_0_0-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-92837\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Acting ICE director Tom Homan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In an appearance earlier this month on<em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/california-playbook\/2018\/01\/03\/ice-chief-ups-enforcement-california-better-hold-on-tight-legislature-reconvenes-eyes-tax-fight-trump-approves-california-disaster-aid-234444\">Fox News<\/a><\/em>, Homan accused California Democrats and Gov.
