He removed the tweet after being told by others that the photo was taken before the venue filled up and apologized in a later Twitter exchange with the president.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"twitter.com\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/939634404267380736\" shape=\"rect\">Trump\u2019s public response<\/a>: \u201c.@daveweigel of the Washington Post just admitted that his picture was a FAKE (fraud?) showing an almost empty arena last night for my speech in Pensacola when, in fact, he knew the arena was packed (as shown also on T.V.). FAKE NEWS, he should be fired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday night, The Washington Post released a statement. \u201cDave Weigel relied on an inaccurate image in tweeting about President Trump\u2019s rally in Pensacola,\u201d the paper\u2019s vice president of communications, Kristine Coratti Kelly, said. \u201cWhen others pointed out the mistake to Weigel, he quickly deleted the tweet. And when he was later addressed by the president on Twitter, he promptly apologized for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump has frequently lashed out at media figures in very personal terms. It was not the first time the White House had called for a journalist\u2019s firing: In September, after ESPN commentator Jemele Hill called the president a \u201cwhite supremacist\u201d in a tweet, his press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said in a White House press briefing that it was a \u201cfireable offense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Saturday, Trump similarly lashed out at two other media organizations,\u00a0<a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/arts-and-entertainment\/wp\/2017\/12\/03\/abc-news-apologizes-for-serious-error-in-trump-report-suspends-brian-ross-for-four-weeks\/\" shape=\"rect\">ABC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-fix\/wp\/2017\/12\/08\/cnn-just-armed-trump-with-new-ammunition-to-launch-another-fake-news-attack\/?utm_term=.763f3e0d7b9c\" shape=\"rect\">CNN<\/a>, that had issued corrections on stories about Trump in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFake News CNN made a vicious and purposeful mistake yesterday. They were caught red handed, just like lonely Brian Ross at ABC News (who should be immediately fired for his \u2018mistake\u2019). Watch to see if @CNN fires those responsible, or was it just gross incompetence?\u201d he tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>Early Saturday morning, Trump tweeted about the \u201cGREAT EVENING last night\u201d at his rally in Pensacola, Fla., where he told the audience, among other things, to \u201cget out and vote for Roy Moore,\u201d Alabama\u2019s Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, who has been\u00a0<a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-isnt-going-to-alabama-to-campaign-for-moore--but-plans-to-hold-rally-next-door\/2017\/11\/30\/b306bb9e-d613-11e7-9461-ba77d604373d_story.html?tid=a_inl&amp;utm_term=.753ebbad7280\" shape=\"rect\">accused of sexual misconduct<\/a>\u00a0with teenage girls. \u201cArena was packed to the rafters, the crowd was loud, loving and really smart,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fAuf6G16GD5TCq\" class=\"moat-trackable pb-f-theme-normal pb-f-dehydrate-false pb-f-async-true pb-feature pb-layout-item pb-f-page-newsletter-inLine injected-by-front-end\" data-chain-name=\"no-name\" data-feature-name=\"no-name\" data-feature-id=\"page\/newsletter-inLine\" data-pb-fingerprint=\"0fgRFUqLJpB\">\n<div class=\"border-bottom- border-bottom- nl-top-hairline\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-inline-unit keywordExists\">\n<div class=\"signup-module row inline-newsletter\">\n<div class=\"title-container col-xs-8\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A short time later, Weigel quoted Trump\u2019s tweet and wrote \u201cPacked to the rafters,\u201d attaching a photo that showed hundreds of available seats in the lower and upper levels. He deleted it about 20 minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Around 5 p.m., Trump addressed Weigel\u2019s tweet with his own:\u00a0\u201c.@DaveWeigel @WashingtonPost put out a phony photo of an empty arena hours before I arrived @ the venue, w\/ thousands of people outside, on their way in. Real photos now shown as I spoke. Packed house, many people unable to get in. Demand apology &amp; retraction from FAKE NEWS WaPo!\u201d the president wrote, including pictures of the venue\u2019s seats filled as he was onstage.<\/p>\n<p>Weigel\u00a0<a title=\"twitter.com\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/daveweigel\/status\/939616810684514304\" shape=\"rect\">tweeted back<\/a>\u00a0almost immediately. \u201cSure thing: I apologize. I deleted the photo after @dmartosko told me I\u2019d gotten it wrong,\u201d Weigel wrote, referring to David Martosko, U.S. political editor of the Daily Mail\u2019s website. \u201cWas confused by the image of you walking in the bottom right corner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a later tweet,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/daveweigel\/status\/939619855191470081\" shape=\"rect\">Weigel wrote<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cIt was a bad tweet on my personal account, not a story for Washington Post. .\u2009.\u2009. Very fair to call me out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among Trump\u2019s grievances with the media, he is notably sensitive about crowd size at his events.
