Top Senate Democrats said Sunday they believe special counsel Robert Mueller may be building an obstruction of justice case that could implicate President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
In separate interviews, California Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Adam Schiff weighed in on indictments and guilty pleas already delivered in the probe of Russia interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we\u2019re beginning to see is the putting together of a case of obstruction of justice,\u201d Feinstein, top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told NBC News\u2019\u00a0\u201cMeet The Press.\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI think we see this in the indictments\u2026 and pleas that have just taken place and some of the comments that are being made,” she added, referring to those of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates and charges against former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former campaign adviser Geroge Papadopoulos, who both pleaded guilty to lying.<\/p>\n “I see it in the hyper-frenetic attitude of the White House, the comments every day, the continual tweets. And I see it most importantly in what happened with the firing of [former] Director [James] Comey, and it is my belief that that is directly because he did not agree to \u2018lift the cloud\u2019 of the Russia investigation. That\u2019s obstruction of justice.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump has denied telling Comey to drop his investigation of Flynn.<\/p>\n Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, told ABC\u2019s\u00a0\u201cThis Week\u201d<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that Flynn might tell investigators that others in Trump\u2019s inner circle \u2014 or even the president himself \u2014 ordered conversations with the Russians meant to undermine the Obama administration\u2019s sanctions.<\/p>\n \u201cThe more that he was involved in directing this, in being knowledgeable of it, the stronger the case of potential obstruction becomes,\u201d Schiff said of Trump.<\/p>\n Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., the top Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee, told CNN\u2019s\u00a0\u201cState of the Union,\u201d<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the prospect that Trump\u2019s decision to fire Comey could amount to obstruction of justice will likely come from Mueller.<\/p>\n \u201cThat’s why I think you’re going to see much more coming from the special prosecutor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
