{"id":89989,"date":"2017-11-28T14:44:54","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T18:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=89989"},"modified":"2017-11-28T14:45:44","modified_gmt":"2017-11-28T18:45:44","slug":"nyt-columnist-thomas-friedman-shows-himself-to-be-a-saudi-super-shill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=89989","title":{"rendered":"NYT Columnist Thomas Friedman Shows Himself To Be A Saudi Super-Shill"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>&#8220;Groveling In Excrement&#8221;: Thomas Friedman Mercilessly Mocked For Bizarre Saudi Puff Piece<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->ZeroHedge.com<\/p>\n<p>On the same day that New York Times columnist Thomas\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2014\/05\/30\/that-time-tom-friedman-said-the-iraq-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;suck on this&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0Friedman penned what reads like\u00a0<strong>a fawning hagiography of\u00a0Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed\u00a0bin Salman<\/strong>, and which glowingly presents the soon to be king as a modernizing reformer intent on liberalizing Islam,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2017\/11\/23\/saudi-arabia-new-counterterrorism-law-enables-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Rights Watch<\/a>\u00a0issued a report exposing a new Saudi counterterrorism law\u00a0<strong>as little more than a dictator&#8217;s tool for crushing dissent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new law, published on November 1 of this year, replaces a 2014 law which defined specific acts of terror and corresponding sentencing guidelines; however, the November decree is described as incredibly vague and broad in its application while allowing for severe consequences for so much as criticizing the king or crown prince. The kingdom has long\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-08-04\/shocking-footage-saudi-siege-against-own-citizens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aggressively rooted out dissent<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>arresting and prosecuting individuals for engaging in protest, even if merely on social media.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user5\/imageroot\/2017\/11\/23\/saudi%20prince.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user5\/imageroot\/2017\/11\/23\/saudi%20prince_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAccording the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2017\/11\/23\/saudi-arabia-new-counterterrorism-law-enables-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Rights Watch (HRC) report<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"quote_start\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"quote_end\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It includes criminal penalties of\u00a0<strong>5 to 10 years in prison for portraying the king or crown prince, directly or indirectly, \u201cin a manner that brings religion or justice into disrepute,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0and criminalizes a wide range of peaceful acts that bear no relation to terrorism.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The law also brings terror-related cases under the direct administrative oversight of the king. HRW provides examples of the types of vague protest related activities that Saudi Arabia can now deem &#8220;terrorism&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"quote_start\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"quote_end\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The new law, however, does not restrict the definition of terrorism to violent acts. Other conduct it defines as terrorism includes \u201cdisturbing public order,\u201d \u201cshaking the security of the community and the stability of the State,\u201d \u201cexposing its national unity to danger,\u201d and \u201csuspending the basic laws of governance,\u201d all of which are vague and have been used by Saudi authorities to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/features.hrw.org\/features\/HRW_2016_reports\/140_Characters\/index.html#en\/saudi-arabia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">punish peaceful dissidents and activists<\/a>. Prominent human rights activists\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrw.org\/node\/121372\/section\/10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abdullah al-Hamid and Mohammed al-Qahtani<\/a>\u00a0are serving 11-year and 10-year sentences respectively, based on charges that contain similar language. Human rights activist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/features.hrw.org\/features\/HRW_2016_reports\/140_Characters\/index.html#en\/essam-koshak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Essam Koshak<\/a>\u00a0is currently on trial on similar charges.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Though HRW has consistently shown itself to be merely critical of countries and regimes considered enemies of the West (for example rarely criticizing US\/UK allies while focusing on Syria or Russia), the report comes amidst growing public awareness of the long ignored and forgotten\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-11-13\/millions-face-starvation-yemen-due-us-ally-saudi-arabias-blockade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saudi-US bombing of Yemeni civilians<\/a>, and consequent humanitarian disaster still unfolding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Even less known is that fact that Saudi Arabia recently flattened an entire civilian town<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-08-11\/saudi-arabias-orwellian-development-plans-shia-town-it-just-flattened\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Awamiya<\/a>, in the country&#8217;s restive Shia-dominated east in a sectarian driven campaign to crush dissent with overwhelming military force. Yes, you read that right. Though I came here at the start of Saudi winter, I found the country going through its own Arab Spring, Saudi style.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Friedman gets worn out by the &#8220;fire hose of new ideas&#8221; from the late night session with the charming young dictator:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"quote_start\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"quote_end\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>After nearly four hours together, I surrendered at 1:15 a.m. to MBS\u2019 youth, pointing out that I was exactly twice his age. It\u2019s been a long, long time, though, since any Arab leader\u00a0<strong>wore me out with a fire hose of new ideas about transforming his country.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The kingdom&#8217;s recent spate of mass arrests, which now include allegations of torture and asset shakedowns by the state, is based in the supposedly heroic vision of noble-minded MbS:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"quote_start\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"quote_end\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8230;his government arrested scores of Saudi princes and businessmen on charges of corruption and threw them into a makeshift gilded jail \u2014 the Riyadh Ritz-Carlton \u2014 until they agreed to surrender their ill-gotten gains.\u00a0<strong>You don\u2019t see that every day.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And apparently Friedman knows what the &#8220;silent majority&#8221; thinks while being entertained at one of the royal family&#8217;s private palaces:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"quote_start\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"quote_end\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Saudi\u00a0<strong>silent majority is clearly fed up with the injustice of so many princes and billionaires<\/strong>\u00a0ripping off their country. While foreigners, like me, were inquiring about the legal framework for this operation, the mood among Saudis I spoke with was:\u00a0<strong>\u201cJust turn them all upside down, shake the money out of their pockets and don\u2019t stop shaking them until it\u2019s all out!\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With zero substantive evidence, we are assured MBS is a liberalizing and moderating force who will deliver universal human rights and equality to the Wahhabi kingdom:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"quote_start\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"quote_end\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>MBS is on a mission to bring Saudi Islam back to the center. He has not only curbed the authority of the once feared Saudi religious police to berate a woman for not covering every inch of her skin, he has also let women drive.\u00a0<strong>And unlike any Saudi leader before him, he has taken the hard-liners on ideologically.<\/strong>\u00a0As one U.S.-educated 28-year-old Saudi woman told me: MBS \u201cuses a different language. He says, \u2018We are going to destroy extremism.\u2019 He\u2019s not sugarcoating. That is reassuring to me that\u00a0the change is real.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;It blew my mind&#8221; says Friedman:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"quote_start\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"quote_end\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But as someone who has been coming here for almost 30 years,\u00a0<strong>it blew my mind<\/strong>\u00a0to learn that you can hear Western classical music concerts in Riyadh now, that country singer Toby Keith held a men-only concert here in September, where he even sang with a Saudi, and that Lebanese soprano Hiba Tawaji will be among the first female singers to perform a women-only concert here on Dec. 6.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Perfect is not the menu&#8221; concludes Friedman as the Saudis kill and maim tens of thousands of Yemeni civilians just across the border:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"quote_start\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"quote_end\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But can MBS and his team see this through? Again, I make no predictions. He has his flaws that he will have to control, insiders here tell me. They include relying on a very tight circle of advisers who don\u2019t always challenge him sufficiently, and a tendency to start too many things that don\u2019t get finished. There\u2019s a whole list.\u00a0<strong>But guess what? Perfect is not on the menu here. Someone had to do this job \u2014 wrench Saudi Arabia into the 21st century<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 and MBS stepped up.\u00a0<strong>I, for one, am rooting for\u00a0am rooting for him<\/strong>\u00a0to succeed in his reform efforts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>MBS a liberal icon of &#8220;moderate&#8221; Islam:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"quote_start\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"quote_end\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Indeed, MBS instructed me: \u201cDo not write that we are \u2018reinterpreting\u2019 Islam \u2014 we are \u2018restoring\u2019 Islam to its origins \u2014 and our biggest tools are the Prophet\u2019s practices and [daily life in] Saudi Arabia before 1979.\u201d At the time of the Prophet Muhammad, he argued, there were musical theaters, there was mixing between men and women, there was respect for Christians and Jews in Arabia.\u00a0<strong>\u201cThe first commercial judge in Medina was a woman!\u201d So if the Prophet embraced all of this, MBS asked,\u00a0\u201cDo you mean the Prophet was not a Muslim?\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Friedman concludes by quoting an anonymous woman on &#8220;hope&#8221; and &#8220;change&#8221; and a\u00a0clich\u00e9d line, &#8220;anything is possible&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And the fact that starting in June that will never again be so\u00a0<strong>\u201cgives me so much hope. It proves to me that anything is possible<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 that this is a time of opportunity.
