McCain and two Democrats\u2014Ben Cardin of Maryland and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire\u2014demanded \u00a0the Senate vote with a unanimous consent to advance Montenegro\u2019s bit to join NATO. McCain blasted the senate \u00a0floor\u00a0 making clear that any colleague who would object to unanimous consent would be siding with Putin\u2019s agenda. \u00a0McCain warned \u201cYou are achieving the objectives of \u00a0Vladimir Putin. He also insinuated that Paul was \u2018 trying to dismember this small country \u00a0{ referring to the country Montenegro} which has already been the subject an attempted coup.\u2019 Sen. Rand Paul not only objected to the vote, but dismissed himself from the chamber. In return McCain explicitly called \u00a0Sen. Rand Paul \u201c an agent of a foreign power.\u201d\u00a0 McCain discredits any opponents by linking them to Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n

Paul said the U.S. military is already \u00a0\u201cstretched thin\u201d. He added, \u201cWe currently have \u2026 combat troops in about six nations. We have troops actively just stationed in probably a couple dozen others,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a $20 trillion debt.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Rand Paul had a reason for his objectives regarding this small but not so innocent country . In 2015 , Montenegro\u2019s long-time President and Prime Minister\u00a0Milo \u0110ukanovi\u0107<\/a>\u00a0 was named \u2018Person of the Year in Organized Crime\u2019. The extent of \u0110ukanovi\u0107\u2019s\u00a0corruption<\/a>\u00a0led to street demonstrations and calls for his removal. In October 2016, a coup that McCain was referring to was attempted by 20 people, including some\u00a0Serbian<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Russian nationalists<\/a>; the coup was thwarted.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs for Rand Paul, McCain knows that his objections to NATO enlargement are rooted in the Kentucky senator\u2019s libertarian-inflected understanding of America\u2019s national interest. On Thursday, Paul released a statement explaining his vote in terms that are abundantly familiar to friends and critics alike: \u201cCurrently, the United States has troops in dozens of countries and is actively fighting in Iraq, Syria, Libya, and Yemen (with the occasional drone strike in Pakistan). In addition, the United States is pledged to defend twenty-eight countries in NATO. It is unwise to expand the monetary and military obligations of the United States given the burden of our $20 trillion debt.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
