{"id":87368,"date":"2017-10-23T15:28:00","date_gmt":"2017-10-23T19:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=87368"},"modified":"2017-10-23T15:28:00","modified_gmt":"2017-10-23T19:28:00","slug":"weinstein-company-investigated-by-new-york-attorney-general","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=87368","title":{"rendered":"Weinstein Company Investigated by New York Attorney General"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>New York AG Launches Civil Rights Probe Into Weinstein Company<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->ZeroHedge.com<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Barrick\u2019s Colony Capital might want to hold off on its planned purchase of \u201csome or all\u201d of the Weinstein Company\u2019s major assets,\u00a0<strong>because the company might need those to settle a civil probe that\u2019s been opened by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/23\/us\/harvey-weinstein-eric-schneiderman.html?smid=tw-share\">New York Times<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/2017\/10\/23\/eric-schneiderman-opens-probe-into-weinstein-company\/\">New York Post,<\/a>\u00a0Schneiderman\u2019s Civil Rights Bureau on Monday sent a subpoena to the Weinstein Company \u2013 which recently accepted an emergency loan from Colony &#8211;\u00a0<strong>seeking a laundry list of documents \u2014 personnel files, criteria for hiring, promoting and firing, formal and informal complaints of sexual harassment or age or gender discrimination, and records of how those complaints were handled, said a source familiar with the investigation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Schneiderman also wants paperwork and communications related to eight settlements that Weinstein reached with accusers that were first reported by the New York Times. The investigation will also examine whether the company should be held financially responsible for any of Weinstein\u2019s misconduct.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user245717\/imageroot\/2017\/10\/04\/2017.10.23schneiderman.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user245717\/imageroot\/2017\/10\/04\/2017.10.23schneiderman_0.JPG\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Eric Schneiderman<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The question of who at the company knew what about Weinstein\u2019s aggressive behavior has been widely explored since the scandal broke earlier this month. Reporting by the New Yorker suggests that most of the firm\u2019s employees knew both Harvey and Bob Weinstein to be difficult, aggressive and abusive in their professional lives \u2013 and some were aware of Harvey\u2019s sexual transgressions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<strong>\u201cNo New Yorker should be forced to walk into a workplace ruled by sexual intimidation, harassment or fear,\u201d<\/strong>Schneiderman said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIf sexual harassment or discrimination is pervasive at a company, we want to know.\u201d<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The inquiry will seek to determine whether the company should be held financially liable for Weinstein\u2019s behavior, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/23\/us\/harvey-weinstein-eric-schneiderman.html?smid=tw-share\">NYT<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>David Boies, a lawyer who has represented Weinstein and the company, said the company and its board were aware of as many as four payouts to women related to Harvey\u2019s behavior. Lance Maerov, a board member, said he was told of only one settlement with a woman who complained of misconduct. The company did not return requests for comment on Monday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user245717\/imageroot\/2017\/10\/04\/2017.10.17weinstein.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user245717\/imageroot\/2017\/10\/04\/2017.10.17weinstein_0.JPG\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Harvey Weinstein<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Weinstein was fired by the company\u2019s board shortly after the scandal broke. He recently completed a one-week stay at a $2,000-a-night rehab center. While he was there, the LAPD announced it had opened a sex crimes investigation into him \u2013 bringing the number of criminal investigations into Weinstein\u2019s behavior to four. They include: The DOJ, LAPD, NYPD and Scotland Yard.<\/p>\n<p>As the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/23\/us\/harvey-weinstein-eric-schneiderman.html?smid=tw-share\">Times\u00a0<\/a>points out, civil investigations like this can be very costly.\u00a0<strong>Those found in violation can face fines and other penalties.
