{"id":86273,"date":"2017-10-12T14:18:10","date_gmt":"2017-10-12T18:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=86273"},"modified":"2017-10-12T14:18:10","modified_gmt":"2017-10-12T18:18:10","slug":"floridas-farmers-produce-smallest-orange-harvest-since-wwii-after-irma-wiped-out-half-of-crops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=86273","title":{"rendered":"Florida&#8217;s Farmers Produce Smallest Orange Harvest Since WWII After Irma Wiped Out Half Of Crops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->ZeroHedge.com<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Irma wiped out nearly 50% of Florida\u2019s iconic orange crop when it buffeted the state with 160 mph winds and a massive storm surge last month, sending orange concentrate futures rocketing higher and stoking speculation that the state\u2019s embattled orange growers \u2013 already struggling to fend off a worsening \u201cgreening\u201d epidemic that\u2019s constrained production over the past decade \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-09-26\/floridas-orange-growers-may-never-recover-hurricane-irma\">might never recover.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user245717\/imageroot\/2017\/10\/04\/2017.10.11orangeproduction.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user245717\/imageroot\/2017\/10\/04\/2017.10.11orangeproduction_0.JPG\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAnd in a development that confirmed traders fears that this year\u2019s crop could be the smallest in decades, which in turn increases the likelihood that prices will remain elevated for the time being (no doubt conferring some small boost to headline CPI),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-10-10\/florida-s-orange-crop-at-76-year-low-crushed-by-hurricane-irma?cmpid=socialflow-twitter-business&amp;utm_content=business&amp;utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social\">Bloomberg\u00a0<\/a>is reporting that the state\u2019s 2017 orange crop was its smallest since 1942, with 31 million boxes harvested.<\/p>\n<p>Oranges are also grown in California, but the drop in Florida orange stocks was largely responsible for the smallest national yield since 1964. In the season that ended Sept. 30, orange output was 68.7 million boxes, according to US Department of Agriculture data. The record low was 4 million boxes in 1918. The data go back to 1913.<\/p>\n<p>While it ultimately bypassed the state, Hurricane Katia terrified farmers and traders when it briefly appeared set to deliver the second devastating blow to the industry in two weeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user245717\/imageroot\/2017\/10\/04\/2017.10.11orangejuicefutures.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user245717\/imageroot\/2017\/10\/04\/2017.10.11orangejuicefutures_0.JPG\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When it tore through the state in September, Irma caused an estimated $2.5 billion in damage to the state\u2019s agriculture, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said on Oct. 4.
