He\u2019s discovered more than 400 cases of people who wandered into the wilderness and never came back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery month in almost every state people go into the wilderness and don\u2019t come out,\u201d\u00a0Paulides said. \u201cThere are so many missing kids in Oregon, it\u2019s ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paulides has mapped out what appear to be more than 30 clusters of vanishings in forests and national parks across the county. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/David-Paulides\/e\/B002ALI9AA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">He\u2019s written 2 books<\/a> documenting his findings and an upcoming movie, \u201cMissing 411.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rjDy2srebK8?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" width=\"640\" height=\"450\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Paulides used to be a cop and got hooked on the inexplicable, intriguing and mysterious missing persons cases after a government employee knocked on the door of his hotel near park service land and told him stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ranger described to me, if you were standing straight up and you just had your pants on and you melted directly into your pants\u2026 that\u2019s what it looked like to him. The pants were laying on the ground in a very neat pile,\u201d Paulides said.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s one of many accounts in his books that leave search crews wondering if they\u2019ll ever find closure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter 7 years of research we found that they replicate themselves in these geographical clusters around the U.S.,\u201d Paulides said. \u201cOne of those clusters being\u00a0Crater Lake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ten years ago, 8-year-old Samuel Boehlke darted away from his father near Cleetwood Cove at Crater Lake. He\u00a0had a mild form of autism and feared loud noises and bright lights, so search crews couldn\u2019t use the customary air horns and whistles to find him.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote4\"><p>\u201cEvery month in almost every state people go into the wilderness and don\u2019t come out.\u201d \u2014 David Paulides<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At the time, searchers told KOIN 6 News the family\u00a0said Sammy liked to curl up in small spaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe circumstances behind his disappearance and the subsequent inability of the park service to find him is unusual,\u201d Paulides said. \u201cThey brought in canines, canines couldn\u2019t pick up the scent. They brought in air support, they couldn\u2019t find him. Search and rescue crews spent more than 10,000 man hours looking for Derrick, but didn\u2019t find a single clue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Derrick was out there with his dad and his grandpa, somehow or another he just walked around, didn\u2019t go far,\u201d Paulides said. \u201cThere was snow on the ground. They should have been able to track him and he vanishes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott Lucas, a search and rescue coordinator with the Oregon Office of Emergency Management, said only one or 2%\u00a0of the missions they launch don\u2019t get answers. They average about 900 searches a year.<\/p>\n<p>Oregon has its share of miraculous survival stories too. Cody Sheehy was just 6 years old when he wandered off deep into the Wallowa wilderness.<\/p>\n<p>Search crews using 2 helicopters with forward looking infrared technology couldn\u2019t find a trace of him in the rugged woods, dampened by snow and rain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn\u00a0almost all these cases they bring helicopters with FLIR to look for heat signatures on the ground,\u201d Paulides said. \u201cThey cant find a heat signature. That\u2019s unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite that, the next morning, 15 hours and 20 miles away, Cody walked up to a house and asked for help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was physically at the end of my rope that next morning,\u201d Sheehy said. \u201cAnd if I hadn\u2019t been in a situation where people found me at that time, I don\u2019t know how I would have done for another night out there. (KOIN)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than 30 years before Sheehy\u2019s harrowing experience, another astonishing story unfolded near Pendleton, where 2 1\/2-year-old\u00a0Keith Parkins ran and stumbled over a dozen miles of snow-covered timberland and mountains before he was found 19 hours later. He was stiff and cold, but alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u00a0mean, to me as a parent, I can\u2019t see my 2-year-old climbing over 2 mountain ranges in the dark,\u201d Paulides said. \u201cThat\u2019s pretty hard to believe and there are some cases where little kids are alleged to have walked up to 20 miles a night, or climbed phenomenal heights, over 3,000 or 4,000 feet and those are facts and it\u2019s highly hard to believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheehy says he\u2019s not an \u201coverly mystical person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u00a0didn\u2019t encounter anything that was unusual,\u201d he said. \u201cOther than the fact that that situation was extremely unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheehy is alive, but the fate of others, like Derrick Engerbretson and Sammy Boehlke, are why Paulides keeps digging for answers.<\/p>\n<p>At this point Paulides doesn\u2019t offer any of his own theories for what happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t come up with any theories and I don\u2019t believe in the paranormal, per se. I just stick with facts in my books, and one of the factual things that happened is we requested \u2014 through the Freedom of Information Act \u2014 a list of missing people from National Park Service,\u201d Paulides said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey came back and stated that they don\u2019t keep lists of missing people in their system,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe National Parks police are among the best trained officers in the United States and they know the importance of keeping lists and we\u2019ve ran this by some of the best investigative journalists in the world.
