Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/912863676792786946?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 27, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In a serious rebuke for President Trump (and perhaps moreso for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell),\u00a0<strong><em>ousted judge and alt-right favorite Roy Moore has won the Alabama Republican Primary by a landslide<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2017\/09\/23\/20170926_more.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2017\/09\/23\/20170926_more_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Steve Bannon-backed candidate, who<strong>\u00a0defied court orders to remove the Ten Commandments from his courtroom and refused to recognize gay marriage<\/strong>\u00a0after the Supreme Court\u2019s June 2015 ruling legalizing same-sex marriage, is<strong>\u00a0leading by 9.6 points with 92% of the votes counted&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2017\/09\/23\/20170926_more2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2017\/09\/23\/20170926_more2_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/elections\/results\/senate-special-election-primary-runoff-alabama\"><em>Source: NYTimes<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/video\/2017\/09\/23\/gorka-roy-moore-victory-strengthens-trump-mcconnell-backed-slfs-steven-law-yellow-belly\/\">former Trump deputy assistant Sebastian Gorka,\u00a0<\/a>who backed Moore, said despite Trump backing the establishment favorite, a Moore victory strengthens Trump&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBut\u00a0<strong>guess what happens \u2013 when Judge Moore wins on Tuesday, it will strengthen the president because now he\u2019ll be able to go to the establishment GOP \u2013 to the swamp dwellers and say, \u2018Hey guys, we are back on my agenda. This wasn\u2019t worth it.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, the president is going to stay \u2013 he\u2019s going to return to the Make America Great Again agenda.\u00a0<strong>We just have to help him, and we\u2019re going to do it from the outside by endorsing people like Judge Moore.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>*\u00a0 *\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>As we detailed earlier, after weeks of increasingly bitter and expensive campaigning pitching Steve\u00a0<strong>Bannon-backed former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore<\/strong>\u00a0(well-known anti-establismentarian) against President\u00a0<strong>Trump-backed Senator Luther Strange<\/strong>(establishmentarian), judgment day has finally arrived.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.washingtonpost.com\/prod\/powaEmbed.html?adBar=true&amp;autoinit=true&amp;org=wapo&amp;playthrough=true&amp;uuid=f21b8426-a2a7-11e7-b573-8ec86cdfe1ed\" width=\"480\" height=\"290\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Heading in the polls had Moore a strong favorite (but Strange showing well in recent weeks)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2017\/09\/23\/20170926_ab1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2017\/09\/23\/20170926_ab1_0.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With polls having closed at 8pmET, early results favored Moore heavily.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/09\/26\/alabama-senate-trump-strange-moore-243171\">as Politco reported this evening,<\/a>\u00a0<strong>President Donald Trump began distancing himself from a Luther Strange loss before ballots were even cast,\u00a0<\/strong>telling conservative activists Monday night the candidate he\u2019s backing in Alabama\u2019s GOP Senate primary was likely to lose \u2014 and suggesting he&#8217;d done everything he could do given the circumstances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump told conservative activists who visited the White House for dinner on Monday night that he\u2019d underestimated the political power of Roy Moore,<\/strong>\u00a0the firebrand populist and former judge who\u2019s supported by Trump\u2019s former chief strategist Steve Bannon, according to three people who were there.<\/p>\n<p>And Trump gave a less-than full-throated endorsement during Friday\u2019s rally.<\/p>\n<p>While he called Strange \u201ca real fighter and a real good guy,\u201d he also mused on stage about whether he made a \u201cmistake\u201d by backing Strange and committed to campaign \u201clike hell\u201d for Moore if he won.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump was encouraged to pick Strange before the August primary by son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner<\/strong>\u00a0as well as other aides, White House officials said. He was never going to endorse Alabama Republican Rep. Mo Brooks, who has at times opposed Trump\u2019s agenda, and knew little about Moore, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0 *\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hotair.com\/archives\/2017\/09\/26\/live-results-alabamageddon-2\/\">HotAir.com explained<\/a>\u00a0earlier how to interpret the result (and the likely fallout)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>If Strange shocks the world, it\u2019ll be Trump\u2019s crowning glory as president (so far).<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He\u2019ll be credited for singlehandedly dragging a lackluster establishmentarian past a well-known populist in a very red state.<\/p>\n<p>His influence over the Republican base will be seen as total and unassailable.<\/p>\n<p>Not even the combined forces of Steve Bannon, Sarah Palin, Sebastian Gorka, Nigel Farage, and Breitbart could counter the gravitational pull of the MAGA north star, as it turned out.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>If Strange doesn\u2019t shock the world, if he goes down in flames despite Trump\u2019s best efforts for him over the past two weeks, populism, not Trumpism, will be seen as dominant among the base<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bannon will exult (privately) that he and Moore taught Trump a hard lesson, that he can\u2019t expect rank and file Republicans to line up behind him unless he sticks to a populist agenda.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Depending on the margin, Trump may be left sweating out a way to spin the defeat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If Strange loses by a few points, it\u2019s easy \u2014 \u201cBig Luther got close with my help, ran a good race!\u201d<\/li>\n<li>If he loses by 16, not so easy.
