Harvard dean rescinds Chelsea Manning\u2019s visiting fellow invitation, calling it a \u2018mistake\u2019<\/h2>\n

Chelsea Manning\u2019s invite to join Harvard\u2019s Kennedy School of Government as a visiting fellow has been rescinded. (Reuters)<\/p><\/div>\n

Harvard\u2019s Kennedy School of Government\u00a0rescinded a visiting fellowship<\/a>\u00a0offered\u00a0to Chelsea Manning,\u00a0the former military\u00a0intelligence analyst who spent seven years in prison for\u00a0leaking classified government secrets, after the university faced forceful backlash from CIA Director Mike Pompeo among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cI now think that designating Chelsea Manning as a Visiting Fellow was a mistake, for which I accept responsibility,\u201d Douglas W. Elmendorf, the school\u2019s dean, wrote in a 700-word statement released shortly after midnight Friday.<\/p>\n

Manning was\u00a0one of four<\/a>\u00a0visiting fellows announced two days earlier by the Kennedy School\u2019s Institute of Politics. As part of the program, visiting fellows appear on Harvard\u2019s campus for speaking engagements and events,\u00a0interacting with undergraduate students on\u00a0\u201ctopical issues of today,\u201d the school\u2019s initial announcement explained.<\/p>\n

Elmendorf\u00a0decided to withdraw\u00a0the invitation after realizing that \u201cmany people view a Visiting Fellow title as an honorific,\u201d though the school had not intended to \u201chonor [Manning] in any way or to endorse any of her words or deeds.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u00a0is still\u00a0welcome to spend a day at the Kennedy School and speak at the\u00a0school\u2019s John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum, the dean\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI apologize to her and to the many concerned people from whom I have heard today for not recognizing upfront the full implications of our original invitation,\u201d\u00a0Elmendorf added.<\/p>\n

Manning\u2019s website generates an automatic response to media requests\u00a0and\u00a0indicates she\u2019s not giving interviews.<\/p>\n

On Twitter, however, she accused the school of suppressing \u201cmarginalized voices\u201d and caving to pressure from the CIA.<\/p>\n
