(Reuters)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Harvard\u2019s Kennedy School of Government\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/announcements\/statement-dean-elmendorf-regarding-invitation-chelsea-manning-be-visiting-fellow?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=hks-twitter&amp;utm_source=twitter\">rescinded a visiting fellowship<\/a>\u00a0offered\u00a0to Chelsea Manning,\u00a0the former military\u00a0intelligence analyst who spent seven years in prison for\u00a0leaking classified government secrets, after the university faced forceful backlash from CIA Director Mike Pompeo among others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI now think that designating Chelsea Manning as a Visiting Fellow was a mistake, for which I accept responsibility,\u201d Douglas W. Elmendorf, the school\u2019s dean, wrote in a 700-word statement released shortly after midnight Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Manning was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/announcements\/institute-politics-harvard-kennedy-school-announces-additional-visiting-fellows\">one of four<\/a>\u00a0visiting fellows announced two days earlier by the Kennedy School\u2019s Institute of Politics. As part of the program, visiting fellows appear on Harvard\u2019s campus for speaking engagements and events,\u00a0interacting with undergraduate students on\u00a0\u201ctopical issues of today,\u201d the school\u2019s initial announcement explained.<\/p>\n<p>Elmendorf\u00a0decided to withdraw\u00a0the invitation after realizing that \u201cmany people view a Visiting Fellow title as an honorific,\u201d though the school had not intended to \u201chonor [Manning] in any way or to endorse any of her words or deeds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0is still\u00a0welcome to spend a day at the Kennedy School and speak at the\u00a0school\u2019s John F. In a biting letter to the event\u2019s organizers, Pompeo, who earned a law degree from Harvard, branded\u00a0Manning an \u201cAmerican traitor\u201d whose actions and ethos contradicted the intelligence agency\u2019s most basic and sacred values.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarvard\u2019s actions,\u201d Pompeo added, \u201cimplicitly tell its students that you too can be a fellow at Harvard and a felon under United States law. \u2026 I believe it is shameful for Harvard to place its stamp of approval upon her treasonous actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pompeo\u2019s blustery withdrawal from Thursday\u2019s event joined a chorus of denunciation\u00a0from national security experts, military veterans and others.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Thursday, in a stern letter of his own, Michael Morell, a former CIA leader who spent more than three decades at the agency, resigned from Harvard\u2019s\u00a0Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.\u00a0He had been a fellow there\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.belfercenter.org\/publication\/spotlight-michael-morell\">since\u00a0September 2013<\/a>. The school\u2019s invitation to Manning, Morell said, all but endorsed her decision to break the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have an obligation to my conscience \u2014 and I believe to the country \u2014 to stand up against any efforts to justify leaks of sensitive national security information,\u201d wrote Morell, 59, who twice served as the CIA\u2019s acting director\u00a0and retired in 2013 as the agency\u2019s second-in-command.<\/p>\n<p>Pompeo\u00a0praised Morell\u2019s decision to resign,\u00a0writing in his letter that Harvard \u201ctraded a respected individual who served his country with dignity for one who served it with disgrace.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video\/c\/embed\/6e462542-997f-11e7-af6a-6555caaeb8dc\" width=\"480\" height=\"290\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nA former deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Michael Morell, resigned from a spot at Harvard Sept. 14 after the school offered a visiting fellowship to Chelsea Manning. Since then, Manning has been a prominent voice for LGBT rights and routinely writes about \u201cthe social, technological and economic ramifications of Artificial Intelligence,\u201d\u00a0as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/announcements\/institute-politics-harvard-kennedy-school-announces-additional-visiting-fellows\">Harvard\u2019s fellowship announcement\u00a0<\/a>noted.<\/p>\n<p>Manning\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2017\/06\/09\/chelsea-manning-on-leaking-information-i-have-a-responsibility-to-the-public\/?utm_term=.5ad3617380a5\">has said<\/a>\u00a0\u201ca responsibility to the public\u201d compelled her to leak government secrets. But\u00a0her harshest critics\u00a0describe those actions as traitorous, having put deployed U.S. troops at risk. President Trump and lawmakers from both political parties have questioned Obama\u2019s decision to commute her prison sentence, which he called disproportionate when measured against the punishment meted out to other whistleblowers.<\/p>\n<p>Like the Obama administration, Trump\u2019s White House has struggled to curtail information\u00a0leaks.\u00a0National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/chrisgeidner\/trump-administration-launches-broad-new-anti-leak-program?utm_term=.wdYJ8gzeEw#.tl6BLnYM50\">issued a memo<\/a>\u00a0this month to leaders throughout the federal government, imploring them to conduct an hour-long training session next week. Manning (@xychelsea) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/xychelsea\/status\/908576602728157184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 15, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In selecting Manning for a fellowship, Elmendorf said, Kennedy School officials felt they were keeping with the program\u2019s guiding objective, which is to expose students to individuals whose words or actions influence world events \u2014 \u201ceven if they do not share our values and even if their actions or words are abhorrent to some members of our community,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do this not to endorse those actions or legitimize those words, but because engaging with people with fundamentally different worldviews can help us to become better public leaders,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/announcements\/statement-dean-elmendorf-regarding-invitation-chelsea-manning-be-visiting-fellow?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=hks-twitter&amp;utm_source=twitter\">he wrote<\/a>. \u201cBecause controversy pervades many questions in politics and public policy, some speakers are controversial. While we do not shy away from that controversy, we insist that all speakers take questions, and these questions are often hard and challenging ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHearing a very wide range of views, regardless of what members of our community think about the people offering those views, is fundamental to the learning process at the Kennedy School.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201cI think we should weigh, for each potential visitor, what members of the Kennedy School community could learn from that person\u2019s visit against the extent to which that person\u2019s conduct fulfills the values of public service to which we aspire. This balance is not always easy to determine, and reasonable people can disagree about where to strike the balance for specific people.
