Murdoch sons are liberal and disloyal to viewership."},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Fox&#8217;s Shep Smith: We couldn&#8217;t find a Republican willing to come on and defend Trump<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->By Julia Manchester<br \/>\nThe Hill<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"590\" height=\"332\" src=\"http:\/\/launch.newsinc.com\/?type=VideoPlayer\/Single&#038;widgetId=1&#038;trackingGroup=69016&#038;playlistId=19132&#038;siteSection=thehill2300_nws_pol_sec&#038;videoId=32843589\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" noresize marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Fox News host Shepard Smith said Wednesday that the network tried and failed to get a Republican on-air to defend President Trump&#8217;s controversial comments on violence in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our booking team \u2014\u00a0and they&#8217;re good \u2014\u00a0reached out to Republicans of all stripes across the country today,&#8221; Smith said on his show &#8220;Shepard Smith Reporting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Let&#8217;s be honest, Republicans don&#8217;t often really mind coming on Fox News Channel. We couldn&#8217;t get anyone to come and defend him here because we thought, in balance, someone should do that,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We worked very hard at it throughout the day, and we were unsuccessful. And of those who are condemning the president&#8217;s condemnable actions, I&#8217;ve not heard any prominent leaders, former presidents, members of the House or the Senate use his name while speaking in generalities,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"video-embed\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/embed\/217662\" width=\"645\" height=\"363\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe>Smith&#8217;s comments followed an off-the-rails press conference by Trump on Tuesday, during which he reasserted claims that &#8220;both sides&#8221; were to blame for violence during a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville\u00a0on\u00a0Saturday that ultimately left one dead and at least 19 others injured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had a lot of people in that group that were there to innocently protest and very legally protest,&#8221; Trump said, referring to individuals protesting against the removal of a\u00a0Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee statue in the town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot all of those people were white supremacists, by any stretch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Various Republicans have spoken out against white supremacy and bigotry following Trump&#8217;s press briefing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must be clear. White supremacy is repulsive. This bigotry is counter to all this country stands for. There can be no moral ambiguity,\u201d House Speaker <span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\"><a class=\"rollover-people-link\" href=\"http:\/\/walter.thehill.com\/people\/paul-ryan\" data-nid=\"188074\">Paul Ryan<\/a><\/span> (R-Wis.) tweeted after Trump&#8217;s remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W.
