Conservatives, he wrote, \u201chave maintained an unnerving silence as instability has ensued,\u201d adding that this \u201cunnerving silence in the face of an erratic executive branch is an abdication, and those in positions of leadership bear particular responsibility.\u201d The press ate it up. \u201cFlake makes waves with Trump takedown,\u201d Politico\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/08\/01\/jeff-flake-arizona-republicans-trump-241223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">declared<\/a>\u00a0days later.\u00a0<i>The Los Angeles Times<\/i>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/la-na-pol-jeff-flake-trump-20170801-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">called him<\/a>\u00a0the \u201cone Republican willing to take on President Trump and his party\u2019s \u2018denial.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-reactid=\".1sn7j5bb5kw.2.1.0.0.$0.1\">\n<div class=\"content-body\" data-reactid=\".1sn7j5bb5kw.2.1.0.0.$0.1.0\">\n<div class=\"article-text-wrap\">\n<div class=\"article-text-grid\">\n<p>It is very unlikely that Flake\u00a0particularly cares about winning plaudits from the establishment press or the left\u2014not when his political career depends first and foremost on winning the GOP nomination in his own reelection campaign next year.\u00a0But his reemergence as a vocal Trump critic, amid the collapse of his party\u2019s legislative agenda, points to an awareness on his part that the president will be a drag on him and other similarly situated Republicans in general elections outside of throbbing-red Trump country.<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing novel about down-ballot politicians attempting to distance themselves from their parties\u2019 standard bearers, especially with hollow criticism. What makes Flake\u2019s rendition unique is the irreducible nature of his criticisms. He isn\u2019t calling out Trump for milquetoast sins like losing touch with the working class, or setting his legislative priorities in the wrong order. His recent broadsides against the administration more closely resemble establishment conservative efforts to expel Trump from Republican politics during the presidential primary than it does typical party frustrations with an unpopular president.<\/p>\n<p>Considering Flake\u2019s near-complete unwillingness to save himself or his party from what he describes as a serious threat, his half-hearted rebellion is a microcosm of the crisis that awaits Republicans if the Trump presidency collapses terminally. They won\u2019t be left asking themselves, as Democrats are today, where they and the party went wrong, but explaining why they made a Faustian bargain with a known villain at unacceptable cost for the rest of us.<span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-text-wrap\">\n<div class=\"article-text-grid\">\n<p>Flake\u2019s recent trip off the reservation is doubly coincidental, timed as it is for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/31\/books\/jeff-flake-conscience-of-conservative-trump.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">release of his new book<\/a>,\u00a0<i>Conscience of a Conservative<\/i>. But it is very hard to imagine Flake going about this rebranding exercise if Trump had been a capable steward of the GOP agenda or had managed to conduct himself less dishonorably\u2013and thus enjoyed favorability numbers higher than the mid-30s.<\/p>\n<p>But Trump has debased everyone who\u2019s tolerated his corruption, indecency and ineptitude even briefly\u2014such that they can\u2019t really attempt to draw a contrast without looking ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish that we as a party would have stood up, for example, when the birtherism thing was going on,\u201d Flake lamented on\u00a0<i>Meet the Press<\/i>\u00a0this past Sunday. \u201cA lot of people did stand up, but not enough. That was particularly ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeffFlake?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@jeffflake<\/a> (R-Ariz.) tells <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chucktodd?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@chucktodd<\/a> in an exclusive interview, &quot;I wish we as a party had stood up&quot; to the birther movement. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MTP?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MTP<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LfIABvICFj\">pic.twitter.com\/LfIABvICFj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Meet the Press (@MeetThePress) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MeetThePress\/status\/894192898480234497?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 6, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>When host Chuck Todd asked Flake if he\u2019d done enough to stop the scourge of that particular racist conspiracy theory, Flake calibrated his answer as an implicit confession that he hadn\u2019t been a perfect role model, but had at least taken a hard line against the birthers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn that I think I did.\u201d<span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-text-wrap\">\n<div class=\"article-text-grid\">\n<p>An amusingly cursory review of the record underscores just how deep the Republican Party\u2019s complicity with the ugliest aspects of Trumpism actually runs.<\/p>\n<p>Just last month, Flake voted along with every single Senate Republican to confirm John Bush, a man who\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2017\/07\/24\/senate-confirms-pro-trump-birther-to-be-a-u-s-court-of-appeals-judge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">published birther screeds online<\/a>, as a federal judge. On Monday, the Republican National Committee announced it had hired the pro-Trump apparatchik Kayleigh McEnany, who also\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deathandtaxesmag.com\/340573\/kayleigh-mcenany-birther-tweets-rnc-spokesperson-kenya-huts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">flirted with birtherism<\/a>, as a party spokesperson. Flake has not objected.<\/p>\n<p>The limits of Flake\u2019s complaints were similarly apparent last year. During the presidential race, he persisted in criticizing Trump even after Trump won the party\u2019s nomination, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/republican-sen-jeff-flake-write-evan-mcmullin\/story?id=43255597\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">claimed to be considering<\/a>\u00a0a third-party vote.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">America deserves far better than <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@realDonaldTrump<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jeff Flake (@JeffFlake) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeffFlake\/status\/784517254239117312?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 7, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Flake never revealed how he voted. But what he never did before the election was tell the country Trump deserved to be defeated, or that Hillary Clinton would make a far better president than Trump, despite keen awareness that Trump was a racist whose victory, however unlikely, would be immensely destabilizing.<\/p>\n<p>Flake now\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2017\/07\/31\/my-party-is-in-denial-about-donald-trump-215442\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">professes alarm<\/a>\u00a0about Trump\u2019s \u201caffection for strongmen and authoritarians,\u201d yet has done next to nothing with his extraordinary power\u2014including a seat on the Foreign Relations Committee\u2014to stop Trump from presiding over a pro-authoritarian administration.<\/p>\n<p>Only a handful of Republicans can boast of having taken meaningful action to contain Trump. That may be changing now that it\u2019s too late. Nearly all of them convinced themselves to hope for the best if Trump won, without expecting or preparing for the worst.
