Tell <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TysonFoods?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TysonFoods<\/a> to clean its act. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CleanItUpTyson?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CleanItUpTyson<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iXk0gM41WR\">https:\/\/t.co\/iXk0gM41WR<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/r6bnJpfbiq\">pic.twitter.com\/r6bnJpfbiq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mighty Earth \ud83c\udf0d (@StandMighty) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StandMighty\/status\/892249826745888768?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 1, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhen excess fertilizer and manure wash off fields that grow feed, they contaminate local drinking water and create toxic algae blooms that cause vast Dead Zones that are toxic to aquatic life in the Gulf of Mexico, Chesapeake Bay, and Great Lakes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This summer, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expects to see a record-breaking Dead Zone \u2013 an area abandoned by marine wildlife as a result of a lack of oxygen and pollution \u2013 of about 8,000 square miles, the size of the state of New Jersey, where the Mississippi River flows into the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The US farms more beef and poultry than any other country, and the third-most pork, while an average citizen consumes over 200 lbs of meat a year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\"><\/div>\n<p>Mighty has decided to target Tyson, which produces about 20 percent of all meat in the US, and whose fields and facilities are concentrated in the most polluted areas, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe company\u2019s market dominance means that it has standardized many of the practices and market incentives contaminating our water and destroying our landscape today. But it also means that Tyson has the ability to lead the transformation of America\u2019s agriculture industry to end these harmful practices,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0say the authors.<\/p>\n<p>Mighty has called upon the company, and others in its wake, to use only\u00a0<em>\u201cpollution-free feed\u201d<\/em>\u00a0from farms where there is no significant fertilizer runoff, to use more than just corn and soy to rear its livestock, and to impose a moratorium on new farms in untouched habitats such as prairies.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAmericans should not have to choose between producing food and having healthy clean water,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Mighty Earth campaign director Lucia von Reusner said, adding that agribusinesses\u00a0<em>\u201chave a responsibility to their customers and the public to clean up.\u201d<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sustainability is an investment in our communities. <br \/>It&#39;s where we work, play, and live!<br \/>We&#39;re thankful for the mission of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nature_org?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@nature_org<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lqzfMHyhIL\">pic.twitter.com\/lqzfMHyhIL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tyson Foods (@TysonFoods) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TysonFoods\/status\/869566866490097665?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 30, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Tyson, which has recently made an effort of playing up its sustainability credentials, has rankled at being singled out.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe don\u2019t agree with the group\u2019s characterization of our company but share its interest in protecting the environment,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the Arkansas-based company said in a statement, published by the Guardian.\u00a0<em>\u201cIt\u2019s true the livestock and poultry industry is a major buyer of grain for feed, however, the report fails to note that a large percentage of corn raised in the US is used for biofuel and that a significant portion is used for human consumption.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cargill, another major producer name-checked in the report, told the Guardian that industry practices are improving.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe continue to improve livestock feed efficiency.
