Trump warns of ending health-care \u2018bailouts\u2019 for Congress, pushes Senate for majority rule<\/h1>\n

President\u00a0Trump<\/a>\u00a0said Saturday that Republican senators look like \u201cfools\u201d for refusing to change\u00a0Senate<\/a>\u00a0rules that would allow legislation such to pass with a simple majority, and suggested that he\u2019s looking at ending health-care subsidies for members of Congress.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a new HealthCare Bill is not approved quickly, BAILOUTS for Insurance Companies and BAILOUTS for Members of Congress will end very soon!\u201d the president tweeted. \u201cAfter seven years of \u2018talking\u2019 Repeal & Replace, the people of our great country are still being forced to live with imploding ObamaCare!\u201d<\/p>\n

The president appeared to be referring to a part of the 2010 health care law that shifted members of Congress and many staffers out of the normal health-benefits plan for federal employees and into the new Obamacare insurance exchanges. The Office of Personnel Management decided that the employer contribution portion of premiums could be provided through the exchange in the District.<\/p>\n

Some conservative groups have been calling for that policy to be revoked.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo unite congressional Republicans, President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0should take action to end the congressional exemption from ObamaCare,\u201d said Jenny Beth Martin of Tea Party Patriots. \u201cIt is apparent that since members of Congress, their families and staff do not have to live under the law they passed for every other American, they lack the incentive to take the action they were elected to take.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added in a statement, \u201cEnding Congress\u2019s special exemption from ObamaCare will motivate Republicans to finally keep their promise \u2014 if not for principle, at least to improve their own insurance predicament.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the heels of a White House-backed healthcare bill failing in the\u00a0<\/span>Senate<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Mr. Trump<\/a>\u00a0forcing out his chief of staff, the president took to Twitter also to express frustration at GOP lawmakers and to challenge\u00a0<\/span>Senate<\/a>\u00a0Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to play political hardball with\u00a0<\/span>Senate<\/a>\u00a0rules.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cRepublicans in the\u00a0Senate<\/a>\u00a0will NEVER win if they don\u2019t go to a 51 vote majority NOW,\u201d\u00a0Mr. Trump<\/a>\u00a0tweeted. \u201cThey look like fools and are just wasting time\u2026The very outdated filibuster rule must go. Budget reconciliation is killing R\u2019s in\u00a0Senate<\/a>. Mitch M, go to 51 Votes NOW and WIN. IT\u2019S TIME!\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Senate<\/a>\u00a0rejected a bill to repeal Obamacare early Friday when three Republicans \u2014 John McCain of Arizona, Susan E. Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska \u2014 joined all of the chamber\u2019s Democrats in voting against it. Republicans couldn\u2019t even muster 50 votes for the measure.<\/p>\n

Hours later,\u00a0Mr. Trump<\/a>\u00a0accepted the resignation of White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, a move that had been building for months amid West Wing infighting and the president\u2019s growing displeasure with what he viewed as weakness by Mr. Priebus in managing the staff.<\/p>\n

The president said Saturday that Democrats are mocking Republican lawmakers for their ineptness.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the\u00a0Senate<\/a>\u00a0Democrats ever got the chance, they would switch to a 51 majority vote in first minute,\u201d\u00a0Mr. Trump<\/a>\u00a0said. \u201cThey are laughing at R\u2019s. MAKE CHANGE! \u2026.Republican Senate must get rid of 60 vote NOW! It is killing the R Party, allows 8 Dems to control country. 200 Bills sit in\u00a0Senate<\/a>. A JOKE! \u20268 Dems totally control the U.S. Senate. Many great Republican bills will never pass, like Kate\u2019s Law and complete Healthcare. Get smart!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump<\/a>\u00a0again called on the\u00a0Senate<\/a>\u00a0GOP Saturday evening to make another effort at repealing and replacing Obamacare.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnless the Republican Senators are total quitters, Repeal & Replace is not dead! Demand another vote before voting on any other bill!\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n

Senior Democrats swiftly interpreted\u00a0Mr. Trump<\/a>\u2019s comments about insurance \u201cbailouts\u201d as a threat to cut off critical \u201ccost-sharing reductions\u201d for insurers who pick up low-income Obamacare customers\u2019 costs.<\/p>\n

Plans must pay whether or not they\u2019re reimbursed by the government, so insurers would likely jack up their rates to make up their losses if\u00a0Mr. Trump<\/a>\u00a0yanked the payments.<\/p>\n

House Republicans secured a court ruling against President Obama for making the payments without congressional approval, so\u00a0Mr. Trump<\/a>\u00a0could simply drop a pending appeal.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the President refuses to make the cost sharing reduction payments, every expert agrees that premiums will go up and health care will be more expensive for millions of Americans. The president ought to stop playing politics with people\u2019s lives and health care, start leading and finally begin acting presidential,\u201d\u00a0Senate<\/a>\u00a0Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said.<\/p>\n
