{"id":78291,"date":"2017-07-20T15:51:07","date_gmt":"2017-07-20T19:51:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=78291"},"modified":"2017-07-20T15:51:07","modified_gmt":"2017-07-20T19:51:07","slug":"robot-employee-at-georgetown-waterfront-drowns-itself-at-mall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=78291","title":{"rendered":"Robot Employee at Georgetown Waterfront Drowns Itself At Mall"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Look at this downtrodden robot and rejoice at your human superiority (for now)<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->By Monica Torres<\/p>\n<p>Robots will take our jobs, sure\u2014if they live that long.<\/p>\n<p>This we know: There are many dystopian predictions of how our future robot overlords will take our jobs.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2017\/jan\/11\/robots-jobs-employees-artificial-intelligence\">Two-thirds of Americans<\/a>\u00a0believe that robots will be doing the jobs of humans in 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>But thanks to one widely shared photo on Monday, we know that at least we\u2019re still superior in one area: swimming.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter user Bilal Farooqi shared a photo of a robot that wandered into a watering hole at the Georgetown Waterfront where he works.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our D.C. office building got a security robot. It drowned itself.<\/p>\n<p>We were promised flying cars, instead we got suicidal robots. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rGLTAWZMjn\">pic.twitter.com\/rGLTAWZMjn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Bilal (@bilalfarooqui) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bilalfarooqui\/status\/887025375754166272?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 17, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"><\/span>The photo alone has already become a symbol of human-robot relations on social media. An image of two humans appearing to help a fallen security robot is delicious to those of clinging to our species\u2019 last shreds of dignity.<\/p>\n<p>That the security robot appears to be the 300-pound Knightscope K5 model makes it even better.<\/p>\n<p>Looking like a clunky R2D2 from\u00a0<em>Star Wars<\/em>, the Knightscope K5 was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2015\/12\/31\/meet-knightscopes-crime-fighting-robots\/\">built<\/a>\u00a0to be a crime-fighting robot that could rove our streets and monitor for suspicious activity. It has been used in some offices and malls across America.<\/p>\n<p>There have been hiccups, however. One Knightscope got defeated by a drunk man\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abc7news.com\/technology\/police-drunk-man-knocked-down-300-pound-robot-in-mountain-view\/1915713\/\">who knocked it down<\/a>. Another\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/liliankim7\/status\/752741535381229568?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theverge.com%2F2016%2F7%2F13%2F12170640%2Fmall-security-robot-k5-knocks-down-toddler\">ran over<\/a>\u00a0a toddler\u2019s foot.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/twitter.com\/liliankim7\/status\/752741535381229568?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&#038;ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theladders.com%2Fp%2F24160%2Fdrowned-robot-and-human-superiority<\/p>\n<p>And now, one Knightscope has fallen into a watery grave.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t know where our jobs will be in 50 years, but we can take comfort in knowing we have the upper hand so far.
