President Donald Trump told reporters that House Majority Whip Steve Scalise\u2019s condition had worsened since surgery after he was shot and wounded at a congressional baseball practice on Wednesday.<\/h3>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been much more difficult than people even thought at the time,\u201d Trump said solemnly at the White House. \u201cIt\u2019s been \u2014 he\u2019s in some trouble. He\u2019s a great fighter, and he\u2019s going to be okay, we hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
The president said he visited Scalise at the hospital and told the family that the entire country was praying for him.<\/p>\n
He commented that Scalise\u2019s tragedy may have brought some unity to the partisan climate in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cSteve, in his own way, may have brought some unity to our long-divided country,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI have a feeling that Steve has made a great sacrifice, but there could be some unity being brought to our great country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump made his comments before signing an executive order to spark more skill training for jobs and apprenticeships in the economy.<\/p>\n
He also praised the two Capitol Police officers who returned fire and were wounded after the shooter began shooting.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey ran right into the fire,\u201d he said. \u201cThey ran right into those guns and the bullets, and they saved a lot of lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
As the event concluded, Trump shared a spirit of unity with the media.<\/p>\n
\u201c[E]verybody in this room, including the reporters, God bless you,\u201d he said as the people in the room laughed.<\/p>\n
\u201cGod bless America,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
