President Donald Trump says former FBI Director James Comey is a \u201cshowboat\u201d and a \u201cgrandstander\u201d who has brought turmoil to the agency.<\/p>\n
Trump, who abruptly fired Comey earlier this week, tells NBC News in an interview Thursday that the FBI was in \u201cvirtual turmoil\u201d less than a year ago and hasn\u2019t recovered.<\/p>\n
Asked about Trump\u2019s description of Comey, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Trump\u2019s comment was \u201cprobably based on the numerous appearances\u201d that Comey has made. Comey has testified before Congress, in public and closed sessions, several times this year.<\/p>\n
His public appearances regarding the FBI investigation into Russia\u2019s role in the 2016 presidential election were nationally televised.<\/p>\n
Sanders says Trump\u2019s comment didn\u2019t leave \u201ca lot of room for interpretation\u201d and it was \u201cpretty clear\u201d what he meant.<\/p>\n

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley is backing up President Donald Trump\u2019s claim that he\u2019s not under FBI investigation.<\/p>\n
Current and former law enforcement officials have questioned Trump\u2019s claim that former FBI Director James Comey informed him three times he was not under investigation. Trump fired Comey Tuesday via a letter in which he made the claim about not being under investigation.<\/p>\n
Grassley says he and top committee Democrat Dianne Feinstein were briefed recently by Comey, and \u201cdidn\u2019t hear, in our briefing by Comey, anything that departed from what was said in that letter.\u201d<\/p>\n
Grassley also says his committee will be hearing from Comey in a closed session, though he didn\u2019t say when.<\/p>\n
Grassley, R-Iowa, made his comments in an interview Thursday for C-SPAN\u2019s \u201cNewsmakers\u201d program.<\/p>\n

In response to Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe\u2019s testimony before a Senate committee in Washington Thursday that fired director James Comey \u201cenjoyed broad support within the FBI,\u201d Ryan countered that Comey had lost the support of senior leadership at the Justice Department.<\/p>\n
Ryan said President Donald Trump listened to the concerns and criticisms voiced by \u201clots of different people\u201d in making his decision to fire Comey.<\/p>\n

Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe has promised to tell the Senate intelligence committee if there is any effort to interfere with the agency\u2019s investigation into Russian activities during last year\u2019s presidential election.<\/p>\n
The ranking Democrat on the committee, Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, asked McCabe during a hearing Thursday whether he would commit to informing the committee of any such attempts.<\/p>\n
McCabe replied, \u201cI absolutely do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Congressional staffers confirm that the two are meeting in a room next to the hearing where top law enforcement and intelligence officials are being questioned about the Russia investigation and Comey\u2019s firing.<\/p>\n
It is unclear what the meeting is about. Video posted on Twitter by ABC News shows Rosenstein and other officials, including Dana Boente, the head of the Justice Department\u2019s national security division, walking into the room.<\/p>\n

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins serves on the Senate intelligence committee. Collins asked acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe if the FBI typically tells people that they are not a target of investigation.<\/p>\n
McCabe said he couldn\u2019t comment on what Comey might or might not have told the president, but that it\u2019s not standard practice to inform someone that they are not a target.<\/p>\n

Appearing on NBC\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d show, Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders calls Rosenstein a person \u201cwho sets the gold standard within the legal system.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also says \u201cI am not aware\u201d of reports he threatened to resign over the way the Comey dismissal was attributed in part to the memo he wrote. But Sanders also said the Trump White House isn\u2019t trying to quash the investigation. \u201cAny investigation that was taking place on Monday is still taking place today,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Democrats who are urging the naming of a special counsel argue this would be the best way to take politics out of the probe.
