REUTERS\/Brian Snyder<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>Amber Randall<br \/>\nThe Daily Caller<\/p>\n<p>Black Harvard graduate students plan to host a \u201cblack-only\u201d graduation ceremony later\u00a0in May.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 125 students will participate in the ceremony, which took over a year to plan, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/post\/32503\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> the College Fix. The event is supposed to celebrate how black students have succeeded in higher education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an opportunity to celebrate Harvard\u2019s Black excellence and Black brilliance,\u201d Michael Huggins, a master\u2019s student \u00a0in public policy, told The Root. \u201cIt\u2019s an event where we can see each other and our parents and family can see us as a collective, whole group. A community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students raised over $27,000 to cover the cost of the ceremony and its reception. They hope to have another black-only ceremony next year that will include undergraduate students as well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"outbrain_widget_0\" class=\"OUTBRAIN\" data-src=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2017\/05\/08\/ivy-league-black-students-decide-to-hold-their-own-black-only-graduation-ceremony\/\" data-widget-id=\"AR_2\" data-ob-template=\"TheDailyCaller\" data-ob-mark=\"true\" data-browser=\"chrome\" data-os=\"macintel\" data-dynload=\"\" data-idx=\"0\"><\/div>\n<p>The students insist that having a ceremony just for black students isn\u2019t a form of segregation, but a way for them to have fellowship together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not about segregation. It\u2019s about fellowship and building a community. This is a chance to reaffirm for each other that we enter the work world with a network of supporters standing with us,\u201d Huggins added.<\/p>\n<p>Black students at Harvard have a higher graduation rate than national standards \u2014 96 percent of the college\u2019s black students graduate within six years, according to a 2011 report.
