Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., is calling out the inconsistencies of FBI Director James Comey\u2019s management of the Hillary Clinton email investigation and the probe into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election.<\/p>\n CNN\u2019s Wolf Blitzer<\/a> asked Gowdy on Wednesday if he agreed with Rep. Adam Schiff\u2019s, D-Calif., suggestion that there was a \u201cdouble standard\u201d on Comey\u2019s approach towards the two investigations.<\/p>\n \u201cComey spoke about Clinton & concealed Trump invest,\u201d Schiff, the leading Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, tweeted Wednesday.<\/p>\n Gowdy agreed that there were inconsistencies in Comey\u2019s approach, but didn\u2019t respond to the allegation that there was a double standard.<\/p>\n \u201c[Comey] told us at the end of the investigation that he was not going to pursue charges against Secretary Clinton,\u201d Gowdy told the CNN anchor. \u201cThat\u2019s a little different than having that conversation on the front end of the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n Gowdy noted that every aspect of\u00a0the Clinton email investigation was \u201cdifficult.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWell, I think it was an unusual case. Keep in mind that [former Attorney General] Loretta\u00a0Lynch recused herself, or at least removed herself. It wasn\u2019t a formal recusal because she met on the tarmac with the spouse of a suspect of an ongoing investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n Comey testified Wednesday that Lynch\u2019s airport tarmac meeting with former President Bill Clinton forced him to assume the role of a prosecutor and\u00a0recommend no charges against Hillary Clinton in a July 5 news conference<\/a>, a responsibility typically reserved for the Justice Department.<\/p>\n With regards to the Russian interference probe, Comey made another \u201cunusual\u201d decision to announce the existence of an investigation on the front end, Gowdy noted.<\/p>\n \u201cHe told us last time we had a public hearing that there was an investigation, either intelligence or quasi-criminal investigation, into matters surrounding Russia\u2019s efforts to interfere with our election,\u201d Gowdy said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s unusual to have that press conference on the front end of an investigation,\u201d he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n Comey has stated on numerous occasions that the FBI does not comment on the existence of\u00a0active investigations.<\/p>\n \u201cI would never comment on investigations \u2013 whether we have one or not \u2013 in an open forum like this,\u201d Comey said of a Russian investigation during a Congressional hearing in January<\/a>.<\/p>\n Just two months later in a March Congressional hearing<\/a>, Comey announced the existence of an FBI investigation into the Russian government\u2019s efforts to interfere in the 2016\u00a0presidential election.<\/p>\n
