Serbian historian and political scientist Sasa Adamovic says Senator John McCain is more than just a US senator: He’s the ‘secretary of state of the US deep state’. The question now on many people’s minds is: has he finally gotten to Trump?<\/h2>\n

On Monday, Senator John McCain started another tour of\u00a0the Balkans, where he is remembered for\u00a0his support of\u00a0the NATO bombing of\u00a0Yugoslavia in\u00a01999, and for\u00a0calls for\u00a0Western powers to\u00a0stage a ground operation in\u00a0the region.<\/p>\n

Arriving in\u00a0Belgrade, McCain held a private meeting with\u00a0recently reelected Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. The two were expected to\u00a0discuss Belgrade’s stance toward\u00a0Syria, as\u00a0well as\u00a0Serbia’s foreign policy orientation in\u00a0general.<\/p>\n

McCain commended Belgrade for its active partnership with the US in military exercises. At the same time, Vucic assured the senator that the country was not going to join NATO, or any other military bloc, but would retain its independence and neutrality. McCain spent part of the joint press conference with the president condemning Russia for its involvement in Syria, and emphasized the US would continue training militants fighting against Syrian President Bashar Assad.<\/p>\n

The senator, Sputnik Serbia contributor Nenad Zoric wrote<\/a>, has fortuitously found himself at\u00a0the center of\u00a0nearly every global ‘hot spot’ over\u00a0the course of\u00a0several decades, including those that are still just heating up. Lately, his name has been mentioned repeatedly around\u00a0the efforts to\u00a0get Montenegro to\u00a0join the NATO alliance. “Before that, he had a vision for ‘solving’ the crisis in\u00a0eastern Ukraine, in\u00a0the Middle East,” etc.<\/p>\n

“Who is John McCain? In whose name does he speak? Whom does he represent?” Zoric asked. Is he a senator? An influential member of\u00a0the Republican majority in\u00a0Congress? A proponent of\u00a0key US lobbying interests?<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0historian and political scientist Sasa Adamovic, McCain is all of\u00a0the above, but\u00a0also more than\u00a0that. The senator, he says, has a direct connection to\u00a0the American deep state.<\/p>\n

“Although formally, McCain’s title is that of\u00a0senator, in\u00a0reality, it would be more appropriate to\u00a0call him the ‘secretary of\u00a0state of\u00a0the deep state’, fighting against\u00a0Trump’s foreign policy, and trying to\u00a0sabotage his foreign policy agenda, which is primarily oriented toward\u00a0normalizing relations with\u00a0Russia,” Adamovic said.<\/p>\n

“McCain’s visit to Serbia can be understood as a kind of attempt to ‘save’ the Balkans from Russian influence, since it is here that the deep state sees the front line between the US and Russia,” the observer added.<\/p>\n

“And given the fact that President Trump had declared very different principles during\u00a0the campaign, McCain’s visit to\u00a0the Balkans evokes feelings of\u00a0awkwardness and discomfort. He’s something like\u00a0an uninvited guest, who must be taken in, but\u00a0where doing so brings no joy.”<\/p>\n

Adamovic stressed that McCain has promoted an interventionist foreign policy for\u00a0over a quarter century now, regardless of\u00a0who \u2013 Democrats or Republicans, were in\u00a0charge in\u00a0Washington.<\/p>\n

“The deep state, which suffered a defeat in\u00a0the last elections, does not want Trump to\u00a0change the US’s foreign policy trajectory, and what McCain is now doing is classical sabotage \u2013 an attempt to\u00a0keep US foreign policy the same as\u00a0it had been until\u00a0now,” the observer concluded.<\/p>\n

Amid the events of\u00a0the last week, including President Trump’s unexpected decision to\u00a0carry out\u00a0cruise missile strikes against\u00a0a Syrian airbase in\u00a0response to\u00a0allegations that the Syrian Air Force had launched a chemical attack on\u00a0rebels in\u00a0Homs, many observers, including long-time Trump supporters, have pondered whether the deep state, and people like\u00a0John McCain, may have finally gotten to\u00a0him. It seems only time will tell whether their fears are warranted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
