He was fired after just 24 days when it became clear that he had lied about meeting the Russian, and misled the vice president.<\/p>\n<div class=\"htmlEmbed section\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p>\u201cThis is his job,\u201d said Mr Peskov, speaking on CNN\u2019s Sunday morning politics show. \u201cHe was talking about bilateral relations, about what is going on in the United States, so we have a better understanding in Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what happens all around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter\">H<\/span>e said that members of Mrs Clinton\u2019s team had also met with Mr Kislyak,\u00a0although he did not give specifics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, if you look at some people connected with Hillary Clinton during her campaign, you would probably see that he had lots of meetings of that kind,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are lots of specialists in politology, people working in think tanks advising Hillary or advising people working for Hillary.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section videoPlayer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">B<\/span>ut earlier this month <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/sns-wp-russia-ambassador-analysis-a1e86220-002d-11e7-8f41-ea6ed597e4ca-20170303-story.html\"><em>Foreign Policy<\/em> reported that no one from the former secretary of state&#8217;s campaign met<\/a> with Mr Kislyak or any other Russian official. The magazine also reported that all the other candidates kept the embassy &#8220;at arm&#8217;s length&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And supporters of Mrs Clinton would point out that the problem did not come from meeting the ambassador, but rather <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/02\/14\/michael-flynn-talks-russia-illegal-did-donald-trump-know-everything\/\">failing to disclose it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Peskov said Moscow was upset about the cloud of suspicion. Mr Trump\u2019s administration has been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/02\/14\/donald-trump-knew-michael-flynn-misled-officials-russia-calls\/\">dogged by a continued\u00a0stream of reports about\u00a0ties to Russia<\/a>, which has infuriated the president and energised his opponents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that Russia is being demonised in that sense comes very strange to us,\u201d said Mr Peskov.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we are really sorry about that. Because the whole issue takes us away from getting the situation to a better position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuite unexpectedly, we were in the position where Russia became, shall we say, a nightmare for the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are self-humiliating yourself to say that a country can intervene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica, a huge country \u2013\u00a0the most powerful country in the world, with very, very stable political traditions \u2013\u00a0and you say that a country can easily intervene and easily influence your electoral process? This is simply impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"htmlEmbed section\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">H<\/span>e insisted that Russia <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/01\/06\/vladimir-putin-accused-us-intelligence-report-ordering-broadinfluencecampaign\/\">&#8220;has\u00a0never had, and never will have, any intention to intervene in another country\u2019s affairs&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Asked about whether he expected Mr Trump to lift sanctions, Mr Peskov said that President Vladimir Putin would not raise the issue first. There is no date yet for a meeting, but the pair will both be at the G20 Summit in Hamburg in July.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">M<\/span>r Putin, he said, was pleased that Mr Trump defeated Mrs Clinton,\u00a0but he insisted that Russia did not intervene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe candidate Hillary Clinton was quite negative \u2013 declaring Russia the main evil, the main threat,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhom would you like better \u2013 the one that says Russia is evil? Or the one that says yes, we disagree, but let\u2019s find points of agreement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said his initial contact with Mr Trump was \u201cquite promising\u201d, but Russia was increasingly disappointed with the response from the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have a proper understanding of the future,\u201d he said. \u201cWe certainly would expect our contacts to be more frequent, more in depth, because we had quite a significant pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were losing potential by blaming everything on Earth on each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do worry. Public opinion \u2013 if you load with a huge burden of fake news, fake blaming on Russia, repeat every day numerous times that Russia is interfering, guilty of trying to hack, that everything that goes wrong in the country is the fault of Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to see this hysteria coming to its logic end.
