The political sympathies of nearly all the nominees suggest that\u00a0this is possible.<\/p>\n<p>Accepting a Film Independent Spirit award on Saturday night, Casey Affleck, who has been nominated at the Academy Awards for his performance in <em>Manchester by the Sea<\/em>, said:\u00a0&#8220;The policies of this administration are abhorrent and will not last.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even Jimmy Kimmel, who is hosting the Oscars, has been known to have the odd jab at Mr Trump on his television show.<\/p>\n<p>The scene for the latest round of the president versus Hollywood\u2019s liberal aristocracy was set at last month\u2019s Golden Globes awards when Meryl Streep rounded on Mr Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Characteristically he used Twitter to hit back, describing her as \u201coverrated\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">T<\/span>hen at the Screen Actors Guild awards a succession of winners, including William H Macy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, took turns to lay into Mr Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Eyes will be on the award for best foreign language film after<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/films\/2017\/01\/28\/oscar-nominated-iranian-director-asghar-farhadi-miss-years-ceremony\/\"> Asghar Farhadi, director of <em>The Salesman<\/em>, was caught by Mr Trump\u2019s travel ban.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Should he win, Mr Farhadi will not be present to receive his award. But his absence will not go unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be the most political Oscars for a number of years. When people were talking about it a few months ago, they thought it would be a race issue,\u201d said one Hollywood insider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow agents are unleashing their stars to say what they will. They are telling their clients they are not going to lose anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another Hollywood observer, Tim Gray, features awards editor of <em>Variety<\/em>, predicted an interesting night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it will be three hours of Trump-bashing,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cThere are 24 awards recognising everyone such as visual effects people, I don\u2019t think they will use it as a political forum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do expect some vague homilies. But if there are three or four attacks, that will light up the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/films\/0\/upset-ending-la-la-land-shouldnt\/\"><em>La La Land<\/em>, a wistful musical<\/a> telling the story of an aspiring actress and a jobbing musician, is expected to scoop a raft of awards, having earned 14 nominations &#8211; an achievement matched only twice before.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">C<\/span>oral has the film as a 1-7 \u00a0favourite for best picture. Emma Stone is a 1-6 favourite to be named best actress.<\/p>\n<p><em>La La Land<\/em>\u2019s Damien Chazelle is a red-hot favourite for the best director award with Coral offering odds of 1-33.<\/p>\n<p>Should <em>La La Land<\/em> be named best picture as predicted, it will be the first musical to win since <em>Chicago <\/em>in 2002, following in the distinguished footsteps of a number of Hollywood classics, including <em>My Fair Lady<\/em> in 1964, <em>West Side Story<\/em> in 1961 and <em>Broadway Melody<\/em> in 1929.<\/p>\n<p>The battle for the best actor award appears tighter, with Casey Affleck 4-6 to take the Oscar for his performance <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/films\/2017\/01\/05\/manchester-sea-review-casey-afflecks-heartbreaking-loss-gain\/\">in <em>Manchester by the Sea<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">H<\/span>e is just ahead of Denzel Washington, who is ranked at 6-5 for his portrayal of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/films\/0\/fences-review-denzel-washington-viola-davis-make-sensational\/\">Pittsburgh bin man and former robber in <em>Fences<\/em>.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the controversy over the absence of any black nominees last year, Washington is one of a number of African Americans in contention.<\/p>\n<p>Viola Davis is seen as a certainty to be named best supporting actress, rated as a 1-100 \u00a0favourite for her performance as Denzel Washington\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n<p>Mahershala Ali is a 1-7 favourite to be named as best supporting actor<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/films\/0\/moonlight-luminous-coming-of-age-heartbreaker-review\/\">in <em>Moonlight<\/em>. \u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s filmmakers will fall a long way short of 1982 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/celebritynews\/11972463\/Colin-Welland-dies-at-81.html\">when Colin Welland proclaimed \u201cThe British are coming\u201d <\/a>after <em>Chariots of Fire<\/em> took four Oscars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyImage section\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">D<\/span>ev Patel is second favourite for his performance in Lion. He plays an Indian who, having been adopted by an Australian couple as a small child, goes home to find his real family.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Garfield, who was born in Los Angeles but raised in Britain, is a contender for best actor for <em>Hacksaw Ridge<\/em>. But he is a 40-1 outsider.<\/p>\n<p>Naomie Harris, who plays the part of Paula, a crack addict, in <em>Moonlight <\/em>has been nominated as best supporting actress.
