Flynn announced his resignation Monday after reports indicated he misled Vice President Mike Pence and other administration officials on the details of a December phone call with Sergey Kislyak, Russia\u2019s ambassador to the United States. Flynn had originally denied discussing\u00a0sanctions, imposed by the Obama administration over allegations of election-related hacking, but a spokesman for Flynn later stated that he \u201ccouldn\u2019t be certain that the topic never came up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the Vice President Elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador,\u201d Flynn wrote in his resignation letter<\/a>. \u201cI have sincerely apologized to the President and the Vice President, and they have accepted my apology.\u201d<\/p>\n

Information on the phone call became available to journalists at the New York Times and the Washington Post due to leaks from former and current U.S. government officials.<\/p>\n

The leaks included a description by intelligence officials of the conversation thanks to an FBI wiretap of Kislyak\u2019s phone. Other leaks revealed F.B.I. agents interviewed Flynn about the call just days into Trump\u2019s presidency and believed he was \u201cnot entirely forthcoming.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with the Daily Caller<\/a> released Tuesday, Flynn admitted to discussing the 35 expelled Russian diplomats during the call but denied more specific mention was made of sanctions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was basically, \u2018Look, I know this happened. We\u2019ll review everything.,\u2019\u201d Flynn stated.\u00a0\u201cI never said anything such as, \u2018We\u2019re going to review sanctions,\u2019 or anything like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Flynn also expressed concern over the leaks themselves, labeling them a \u201ccriminal act.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou call them leaks. It\u2019s a criminal act. This is a crime. It\u2019s not just a wink and a nod,\u201d Flynn said.<\/p>\n

Trump similarly condemned the leaks Tuesday, asking why so many \u201cillegal leaks\u201d were emanating from Washington D.C.<\/p>\n

The real story here is why are there so many illegal leaks coming out of Washington? Will these leaks be happening as I deal on N.Korea etc?<\/p>\n

Wikileaks later shared an article from the Intercept\u2019s Glenn Greenwald that argued in favor of the leaks despite their illegality.<\/p>\n
