Credit Rob Kim\/Getty Images<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"250\" data-total-count=\"250\"><a class=\"meta-per\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/person\/68676\/Meryl-Streep?inline=nyt-per\">Meryl Streep<\/a>, in a fiery speech criticizing President Trump on Saturday night, pledged to stand up against \u201cbrownshirts and bots\u201d at a time when she and others are increasingly denouncing his administration\u2019s policies and the president himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"198\" data-total-count=\"448\">Ms. Streep, in New York City accepting an award from the Human Rights Campaign, referred to the backlash she received after the <a class=\"meta-classifier\" title=\"More articles about the Golden Globes.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/subjects\/g\/golden_globes_awards\/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier\">Golden Globes<\/a> in January, when she gave a speech denouncing Mr. Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"281\" data-total-count=\"729\">\u201cIt\u2019s terrifying to put the target on your forehead, and it sets you up for all sorts of attacks and armies of brownshirts and bots and worse, and the only way you can do it is to feel you have to,\u201d Ms. Streep said. \u201cYou have to. You don\u2019t have an option. You have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"215\" data-total-count=\"944\">It was not immediately clear to whom Ms. Streep was referring in using the loaded term \u201cbrownshirts,\u201d which was originally applied to a paramilitary group that assisted the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"388\" data-total-count=\"1332\">The speech was an even more stinging rebuke of Mr. Trump than her Golden Globes speech. She seemed to relish a new type of role: Trump provocateur. Although this time, Ms. Streep was without a national television audience. She took a moment to respond directly to Mr. Trump, who called her \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/818419002548568064?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">overrated<\/a>\u201d in the midst of a barrage of posts on Twitter the morning after the Golden Globes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"136\" data-total-count=\"1468\">\u201cI am the most overrated, overdecorated and, currently, overberated actress, who likes football, of my generation,\u201d Ms. Streep said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"27\" data-total-count=\"1495\">The crowd applauded wildly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"320\" data-total-count=\"1815\">Ms. Streep was receiving the National Ally for Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign, an advocacy group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues. Near the beginning of her acceptance speech, she addressed, initially in a lighthearted way, one of the most controversial parts of her Golden Globes speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do like football,\u201d Ms. Streep said, to a roar of laughter from the crowd at the Waldorf Astoria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"215\" data-total-count=\"2133\">At the Golden Globes, Ms. Streep said, \u201cHollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners.
