No country trades away spies, as the rest would fear they&#8217;re next,\u201d<\/em> Snowden wrote on his Twitter. While it was not immediately clear if he was being sarcastic or seriously concerned, the CIA employee-turned-whistleblower accompanied his tweet with several pre-inauguration retweets from January, when the topic of Snowden becoming Vladimir Putin\u2019s gift to Trump was all the rage in US media.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/twitter.com\/Snowden\/status\/830200565720346624?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Katie Couric in December, Snowden used a similar argument when asked about his feelings on possible extradition to the US. Admitting that he is concerned for his life and liberty, the whistleblower argued that on the other hand an extradition would be an excellent proof of his independence.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m actually kind of encouraged\u2026 It wasn\u2019t so many years ago that people were saying, \u2018This guy\u2019s a Russian spy.\u2019 But countries don\u2019t give up their spies,\u201d<\/em> the renowned whistleblower told Couric, alleging that as a critic of the Russian government policies he might have turned into a burden for Moscow.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here\u2019s what <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Snowden?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@snowden<\/a> told me about the possibility of Putin handing him over as a good will gesture to the Trump administration. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LdoxE7cYvA\">pic.twitter.com\/LdoxE7cYvA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Katie Couric (@katiecouric) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/katiecouric\/status\/830200506496720896?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 10, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The whistleblower went on to suggest that his handover to the US authorities would clear him of any suspicion and serve as a <em>\u201cvindication\u2026of the fact that I have always worked on behalf of the United States.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a report, published by NBC News on Friday, an unnamed <em>\u201cUS senior official\u201d<\/em> claimed that the Russian government was actively considering the possibility of handing over Snowden<em> \u201cto curry favor\u201d<\/em> with President Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The official alleged that he had come to a conclusion of Russia\u2019s alleged intentions upon studying a <em>\u201cseries of highly sensitive intelligence reports.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Clinton&#39;s top CIA surrogate Mike Morrell has been urging Putin give Snowden to Trump as a &quot;gift.&quot; Russia&#39;s response: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Jws6UEFvso\">https:\/\/t.co\/Jws6UEFvso<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0boCa72umT\">pic.twitter.com\/0boCa72umT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/821821046739308544?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 18, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Another US intelligence source cited in the piece said that the intelligence, allegedly containing thoughts by Russian officials on how to cater to the current administration, have been collected since Trump\u2019s inauguration on January 20.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Snowden\u2019s lawyer Ben Wizner appeared to be in the dark about a possible radical change of his client\u2019s status, telling NBC News nothing indicates such a move.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Team Snowden has received no such signals and has no new reason for concern,\u201d<\/em> Wizner said.<\/p>\n<p>While the latest report has not attracted any attention from Moscow yet, in January the idea of Russia utilizing Snowden as an <em>\u201cinauguration gift\u201d<\/em> for Trump was slammed by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova as an <em>\u201cideology of betrayal.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Back then the suggestion came from the former CIA director Michael Morell, who alleged that by presenting newly-sworn US President with Snowden, Russia not only would court Trump, but also make a <em>\u201cpoke\u2026in the eye of [Putin\u2019s adversary] Barack Obama.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Zakharova argued that by proposing to trade Snowden for a potential favor, Morell shows that <em>\u201cit is normal [for CIA] to present people as gifts and give up those who seek protection.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Snowden has been living in Russia since 2013 after his request for asylum was satisfied by the Russian government and subsequently extended for three years. In January, the asylum was successfully renewed for two more years, Zakharova confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Trump is known for his tough stance on Snowden, whom he has denounced as <em>\u201ca traitor and a disgrace.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMake no mistake, he is no hero.
