Photograph: Andrew Kelly\/Reuters<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Associated Press<\/p>\n<p>Vincent Viola, an infantry veteran and founder of a high-speed trading firm nominated by Donald Trump to be secretary of the army, has withdrawn his name from consideration.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-1 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item \"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>A <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-administration\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Trump administration<\/a> official confirmed that Viola had withdrawn. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official wasn\u2019t authorized to speak publicly.<\/p>\n<p>A Pentagon statement on Friday night said defence secretary James Mattis was \u201cdisappointed but understands and respects\u201d Viola\u2019s decision, adding that it would make another recommendation soon.<\/p>\n<p>The Military Times, which first reported the news, cited Viola\u2019s inability to get around defense department rules concerning his family businesses as the reason for withdrawing his name.<\/p>\n<p>Viola is a former chairman of the New York Mercantile Exchange and a leader in electronic trading. Along with Virtu chief executive Douglas Cifu, he bought the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>A 1977 West Point graduate, Viola trained as an airborne ranger infantry officer and served in the 101st Airborne Division.
