The media had a gigantic whinefest Thursday after President Trump<\/strong>\u2018s scruffy senior advisor Steve Bannon<\/strong> said the media should be \u201cembarrassed\u201d about how wrong they got the 2016 presidential election. He told a NYT<\/em> reporter that the\u00a0fourth estate\u00a0should \u201ckeep its mouth shut and just listen for\u00a0awhile.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhen a white nationalist tells you to shut up, who knows humiliation and embarrassment like someone who cuddles up to the frog Nazi movement?\u201d MSNBC\u2019s Joy Reid<\/strong> asked rhetorically on Lawrence O\u2019Donnell<\/strong>\u2018s program Thursday night. \u201cSo yeah, I guess he would understand about embarrassment. I am embarrassed indeed that he is steps away from the president of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n O\u2019Donnell and Reid joked that maybe they should just sit there silently for 45 minutes.<\/p>\n They weren\u2019t the only journalists to react with deep shock to Bannon\u2019s blustery attack.<\/p>\n \u201cA lie as much as anything else,\u201d tweeted BuzzFeed<\/em>\u2018s Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith<\/strong>, who published a 35-page dossier the site knew likely contained lies about Donald Trump on behalf of the Russians. \u201cNo reason for media to let him make this true by saying it over and over.\u201d<\/p>\n Among Bannon\u2019s jabs was that the media is the \u201copposition party.\u201d<\/p>\n To that, WaPo<\/em>\u2018s Professor\u00a0Chris Cillizza<\/strong> remarked, \u201cThis is a fundamental misunderstanding of the media\u2019s role.\u201d<\/p>\n Even when he\u2019s making sense Jay Rosen<\/strong>, the nerdy, smug NYU journalism prof, is still annoying. He blasted Bannon, saying, \u201cIf there was any doubt in journalists\u2019 minds that the press was being used as a hate object, Bannon just ended it.\u201d<\/p>\n CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper<\/strong>, who is largely known for being accepted by\u00a0both the left and right spectrums\u00a0of the media, said on air as well as Twitter, \u201cReminder that the president\u2019s top aide just told NYT that the press should keep its mouth shut. No.\u201d<\/p>\n Steven Crowder, <\/strong>a\u00a0conservative\u00a0political commentator,\u00a0<\/strong>had a different take. \u201cI\u2019m not a Steve Bannon fan,\u201d he said. \u201cBut he wasn\u2019t silencing the media. He was offering advice for avoiding further humiliations.\u201d<\/p>\n He was reacting to Jim Roberts<\/strong>, who had a pointed response to Trump\u2019s senior aide: \u201cNote to Steve Bannon: The media SHOULDN\u2019T keep its mouth shut. And it won\u2019t.\u00a0I\u2019ve said this before. No president has successfully waged war against the news media. Trump will be no different.\u201d Roberts spent 26 years at the NYT<\/em>, where ultimately he held the position of assistant managing editor.<\/p>\n CNN media writer Dylan Byers<\/strong> surprisingly agreed with Crowder. In his elder statesman\u2019s nightly newsletter \u2014 I\u2019m referring to Brian Stelter<\/strong> \u2014 Byers wrote, \u201cThe insinuation that the media should \u2018keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while\u2019 is troubling, though perhaps not as much as folks think. Maybe I\u2019m wrong, but I think Bannon meant to say that the media should rethink its approach to Trump before criticizing his every utterance. I\u2019m not defending what he said, but I don\u2019t think we need to be histrionic either. I don\u2019t think he\u2019s calling for an actual gag order.\u201d<\/p>\n Stelter, who thankfully did not pose another 50 questions, said\u00a0Bannon is right to encourage\u00a0journalists to just listen for awhile. But he didn\u2019t miss a chance to sound wimpy. He said pronouncing journalists as the opposition party was \u201cdemeaning\u201d and \u201cexposed a hatred of the press that is corrosive to our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n There was no relief for HuffPost<\/em> writer Michael Blackman<\/strong>, who\u00a0fell right into then vat of hate that Bannon spewed earlier in the day. \u201cSteve Bannon says the media should \u2018keep its mouth shut,’\u201d he wrote on Twitter. \u201cI\u2019m surprised he didn\u2019t refer to it as the Jew media.\u201d Blackman was referring to Bannon\u2019s divorce records, which states that he allegedly said he didn\u2019t want his daughter attending a school with a lot of Jews.<\/p>\n Lisa Goldman<\/strong>, a writer and editor and co-founder of 972mag<\/em>, expressed deep concern over what Bannon said. \u201cI\u2019m not worried Trump will shut down the media,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI\u2019m worried that the media will lose its power to influence. That\u2019s what happened in Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n Breitbart News<\/em> of course acted like Bannon, the site\u2019s former Executive Editor, wasn\u2019t including them in his spanking. The site\u00a0kissed Trump\u2019s ass throughout the election and there was no mistaking who they supported. The site published a scary\u00a0photograph of Bannon that makes him look like a villainous blob and blew up his\u00a0words in big red bold letters.<\/p>\n Are they trying to cast Bannon for a role in a horror film?<\/p>\n NYT<\/em> liberal op-ed writer Charles Blow<\/strong> sounded like he was literally blown over by Bannon\u2019s words.<\/p>\n \u201cWe all have to adjust to this unprecedented assault on the truth and stand ready to vigilantly defend against it, because without truth, what\u2019s left?\u201d he asked in an emotional<\/a> Thursday column about what a liar Trump is. \u201cOur president is a pathological liar,\u201d he wrote. \u201cSay it. Write it. Never become inured to it.\u201d<\/p>\n HuffPost Weird News<\/em> had a unique\u00a0reaction to being told to shut up. The folks who run this vertical called Trump an \u201casshole.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNow keeping my mouth shut because Stephen K. Bannon told me to,\u201d he wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\nPolitico<\/em> media writer Jack Shafer<\/strong>\u00a0tried sarcasm as a coping method.<\/p>\n
