Simply put, because Obama\u2019s version of \u201cnet neutrality\u201d ceased having much to do with actual net neutrality before it even began\u2026\u00a0Like most bills sold to the public by Barack Obama, \u201cnet neutrality\u201d was a total lie. It was no more \u201cneutral\u201d than Obamacare was \u201caffordable,\u201d or the Dodd\u2013Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was actually intended to help \u201cprotect consumers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some of the more popular myths about \u201cnet neutrality\u201d were that is was needed to help minorities and the underserved communities get better access to the Internet, encourage competition between broadband providers, protect us from Internet \u201cFast Lanes,\u201d and who can forget the nonsense about how if \u201cnet neutrality\u201d wasn\u2019t passed, it would put Netflix out of business. Anyone who reads those articles, and still thinks the same Barack Obama wanted an \u201copen, free, and neutral Internet,\u201d is delusional.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f0bLDkWEEUI?wmode=transparent\" width=\"660\" height=\"460\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/trump-net-neutrality-fcc-chairman-ajit-pai-2017-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Business Insider reports:<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>President Donald Trump plans to name Ajit Pai as head of the Federal Communications Commission, <a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/donald-trump-administration\/2017\/01\/ajit-pai-fcc-chairman-233905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">according to a report<\/a> from Politico\u2019s Alex Byers and Tony Romm.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pai has served as a GOP commissioner at the FCC since 2012. He was widely expected to at least be named interim chairman after <a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/fcc-tom-wheeler-leaving-net-neutrality-rules-trump-2016-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">outgoing boss Tom Wheeler<\/a> announced he would depart the agency on Inauguration Day.<\/p>\n<p>Politico\u2019s report, however, says <strong><em>Pai will be named Wheeler\u2019s official replacement.<\/em><\/strong> A formal announcement could come as soon as Friday, according to the report. <strong><em>Pai would be able to take the mantle immediately since he has already been confirmed by the Senate as a commissioner under\u00a0Barack Obama\u2019s administration.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spokespeople for Pai and the FCC did not immediately reply to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>While expected, the appointment would align with signs that Trump\u2019s FCC would <a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/donald-trump-fcc-net-neutrality-zero-rating-policy-future-2016-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">roll back<\/a> Obama-era policies \u2014 most notably the 2015 Open Internet Order, which set <a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/what-the-fccs-net-neutrality-vote-really-means-2015-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">today\u2019s net-neutrality rules<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Broadly speaking, those laws regulate the internet as a public utility.<\/em><\/strong> More practically, they\u2019re meant to keep internet service providers from blocking or slowing down certain content \u2014 which could benefit services owned by an ISP itself \u2014 or forcing others to pay fees to receive preferential treatment.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Larger telecom companies like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&amp;T have generally opposed the 2015 law, while smaller ISPs and internet companies like Netflix and Google, among others, <a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/amazon-netflix-google-and-others-put-pressure-on-fcc-over-net-neutrality-2014-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">have expressed support<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pai has vocally dissented from most of Wheeler\u2019s policies, however, and, along with fellow Republican commissioner Michael O\u2019Rielly,<strong><em> he voted against the net-neutrality order in 2015. He also opposed Wheeler\u2019s proposed <a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/fcc-cable-box-kill-republicans-donald-trump-2016-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">reform of the set-top-box market<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Instead, he has maintained a strong desire to deregulate telecoms companies and lessen the reach of the FCC as a whole \u2014 a view that has often sat favorably with large ISPs.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/transition.fcc.gov\/Daily_Releases\/Daily_Business\/2016\/db1207\/DOC-342497A1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">December speech<\/a> to the conservative-leaning Free State Foundation, for instance, Pai said he was \u201cmore confident than ever\u201d that the current net-neutrality law\u2019s \u201cdays are numbered,\u201d and that <strong><em>he\u2019d like the future FCC to \u201cfire up the weed wacker\u201d and remove numerous regulations currently in place.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thelastgreatstand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/FCC-2.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-58315\" src=\"http:\/\/thelastgreatstand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/FCC-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reuters\/Jonathan Ernst<\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/www.multichannel.com\/news\/fcc\/exclusive-trump-team-embraces-fcc-remake-blueprint\/410194\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">report from Multichannel News<\/a> said that Trump\u2019s FCC transition team is aiming to follow along those lines by removing some of the FCC\u2019s regulatory powers and shifting them to other agencies like the Federal Trade Commission. <a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2017\/01\/trump-voters-need-fast-broadband-and-net-neutrality-too-tom-wheeler-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wheeler has said that<\/a> such moves could dramatically lessen the ability of large ISPs to be affected by federal oversight.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>If named chairman, Pai would take control of a shorthanded FCC to start, <\/em><\/strong>with O\u2019Rielly and Democrat Mignon Clyburn the only commissioners. Trump will have to name another Democrat and another Republican to fill out the agency.<\/p>\n<p>If Pai is named Wheeler\u2019s official replacement, however, it would allow him and the Republican-led Senate to put their plans in motion as soon as possible, according to Ernesto Falcon, legislative counsel at the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation. <strong><em>Any\u00a0changes to net neutrality laws and the like would take months, though, and include\u00a0a period of\u00a0public comment.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/john-cassidy\/obamas-bad-pick-a-former-lobbyist-at-the-f-c-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Like Wheeler<\/a>, Pai has spent time directly serving telecom interests, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/about\/leadership\/ajit-pai\" rel=\"nofollow\">having worked<\/a> as a lawyer for Verizon from 2001 to 2003. (Notably, he\u2019s also a former\u00a0staffer for Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, a close Trump aide and Trump\u2019s pick for attorney general.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>If he follows through on his past rhetoric, however, his FCC is likely to take a sharp turn from what we\u2019ve seen in the past four years.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thelastgreatstand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/NN.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-58314\" src=\"http:\/\/thelastgreatstand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/NN.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>WHAT EXACTLY\u00a0IS NET NEUTRALITY?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/freedomoutpost.com\/net-neutrality-really-means-impact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>The following comes from an older article on Freedom Outpost:<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s what <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/net-neutrality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Obama<\/strong><\/a><strong> wants to you think it is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNet neutrality\u201d has been built into the fabric of the Internet since its creation \u2014 but it is also a principle that we cannot take for granted. <\/em><strong><em>We cannot allow Internet service providers (ISPs) to restrict the best access or to pick winners and losers in the online marketplace for services and ideas.<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That is why today, I am asking the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to answer the call of almost 4 million public comments, and <\/em><strong><em>implement the strongest possible rules to protect net neutrality.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Obama wants the FCC to\u00a0<\/strong><strong><em>\u201ccreate a new set of rules protecting net neutrality and ensuring that neither the cable company nor the phone company will be able to act as a gatekeeper, restricting what you can do or see online.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong>(Could it be that this is a way for the GOVERNMENT to restrict what we can do or see online? Read on to find out.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are the <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/net-neutrality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>rules<\/strong><\/a><strong> he is recommending:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>No blocking.<\/strong>\u00a0If a consumer requests access to a website or service, <strong><em>and the content is legal, your ISP should not be permitted to block it. <\/em><\/strong>That way, <strong><em>every player \u2014 not just those commercially affiliated with an ISP<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 gets a fair shot at your business.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No throttling.<\/strong>\u00a0Nor should ISPs be able to <strong><em>intentionally slow down some content or speed up others<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 through a process often called \u201cthrottling\u201d \u2014 based on the type of service or your ISP\u2019s preferences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increased transparency.<\/strong>\u00a0The connection between consumers and ISPs \u2014 the so-called \u201clast mile\u201d \u2014 is not the only place some sites might get special treatment. So, I am also asking the FCC to make full use of the transparency authorities the court recently upheld, and if necessary to apply net neutrality rules to points of interconnection between the ISP and the rest of the Internet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No paid prioritization.<\/strong>\u00a0Simply put:<strong><em> No service should be stuck in a \u201cslow lane\u201d because it does not pay a fee.<\/em><\/strong> That kind of gatekeeping would <strong><em>undermine the level playing field essential to the Internet\u2019s growth.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am asking for an <strong><em>explicit ban on paid prioritization and any other restriction<\/em><\/strong> that has a similar effect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does Obama want the FCC to do all of this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>His explanation, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/net-neutrality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>in his own words<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>So the time has come for the <\/em><strong><em>FCC to recognize that broadband service is of the same importance<\/em><\/strong><em> and must carry the same obligations as so many of the<\/em><strong><em> other vital services do.<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To do that, I believe the <\/em><strong><em>FCC should reclassify consumer broadband service under Title II of the Telecommunications Act \u2014 while at the same time forbearing from rate regulation and other provisions less relevant to broadband services.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>This is a basic acknowledgment of the services ISPs provide to American homes and businesses, <\/em><strong><em>and the straightforward obligations necessary to ensure the network works for everyone<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2014 not just one or two companies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cother vital services\u201d Obama is referring to are public utilities like water and electricity. In other words, <a href=\"http:\/\/beforeitsnews.com\/r2\/?url=http:\/\/freedomoutpost.com\/2014\/10\/costly-internet-tax-horizon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">he wants the internet to be regulated<\/a> the same way. All of that makes it sound like Obama is looking out for American citizens, doesn\u2019t it?
