Paul Ryan: Russia a \u2018menace,\u2019 Putin \u2018menacing\u2019<\/h1>\n

WASHINGTON \u2014 House Speaker Paul Ryan called Russia<\/a> a \u201cglobal menace led by a man who is menacing,\u201d once more underscoring the divide over Russia between President-elect Donald Trump and some lawmakers in his own party.<\/p>\n

Appearing at a CNN Town Hall Thursday night, Ryan fielded questions from moderator Jake Tapper and audience members on health care, immigration, trade, foreign policy and even Trump\u2019s Twitter habits.<\/p>\n

The speaker reiterated his view that Russia \u201ctried to affect our elections by meddling in our elections … there is no place for that.\u201d He said sanctions were called for, and accused the Obama administration of not standing up to Russia over the past eight years, saying it followed \u201ctoo much of an appeasement policy.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Trump has called for a closer relationship with Russia, Ryan said, \u201cThe Russians are up to no good, we all know that.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the same time, Ryan contended Russian\u2019s actions had no impact on the election and dismissed as \u201cjunk\u201d unsubstantiated claims that Russia has compromising information about Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t even want to confer any more legitimacy to this stuff by talking about it,\u201d he said, referring to those reports. \u201cIt\u2019s not even worthy of media.\u201d<\/p>\n

On GOP plans to undo the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, Ryan said Republicans want to repeal it and replace it at roughly the same time, as Trump has called for.<\/p>\n

As recently as last month, the speaker told the\u00a0Journal Sentinel\u00a0<\/em>in an interview that after repeal, \u201cit will clearly take time\u201d to craft a replacement.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not going to be replaced come next football season,\u201d he said in December.<\/p>\n

But Ryan said Thursday, \u201cWe want to do this at the same time and in some cases in the same bill.\u201d<\/p>\n

On immigration, Ryan was confronted by an undocumented immigrant and mother from Oklahoma who was brought to this country as a child. She said her daughter would lose her mother if Republicans repeal protections from deportation put in place by President Obama.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think I should be deported?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

Ryan told her, \u201cNo,\u201d \u2014 that, “I can see that you love your daughter and you’re a nice person who has a great future ahead of you, and I hope your future’s here.”<\/p>\n

He said there would be no mass-deportation force and that the focus would be on deporting illegal immigrants who are repeating and violent offenders.<\/p>\n

Ryan\u2019s questioners also included a man who said his life had been saved by Obamacare and a woman opposed to GOP plans to defund Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n

Ryan said generally of Trump: \u201cWe don\u2019t all agree on everything. I think people kind of know that.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he said they are in sync on much of what they want to get done this year.<\/p>\n

Asked about Trump\u2019s use of Twitter as communication tool, Ryan said the president-elect had mastered how to communicate directly without filters and \u201cgiven voice to people who felt they\u2019ve not been heard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Said Ryan: \u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s going to stop doing that. … How it affects domestic policy and foreign policy, I don\u2019t know. We\u2019re going to find out, because we\u2019re in uncharted territory.\u201d<\/p>\n
