The newspaper now says authorities have no such \u201cindications\u201d as people on social media claim the outlet promotes \u201cfake news.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__text text \">\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\"><a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/op-edge\/372372-russia-hack-nsa-director\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.rt.com\/files\/2016.12\/thumbnail\/5867ce6dc46188ca438b4628.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Pawel Kopczynski \" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\"><\/div>\n<h4 class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\"><a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/op-edge\/372372-russia-hack-nsa-director\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"read-more__footer\">No real proof in \u2018Russian hacking\u2019 report, as it lacks crucial details \u2013 ex-NSA tech director to RT<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>_<br \/>\nOn Friday, Burlington Electric, a Vermont-based power company, raised an alarm after finding malware code on a company laptop. Referring to undisclosed officials, the Washington Post then ran a damning headline, saying that <em>\u201cRussian operation hacked a Vermont utility\u201d<\/em> which posed a risk <em>\u201cto US electrical grid security.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yet it turns out that the laptop that was penetrated wasn\u2019t even attached to the power network, according to a statement from Burlington Electric. <em>\u201cWe detected suspicious internet traffic in a single Burlington Electric Department computer not connected to our organization\u2019s grid systems,\u201d<\/em> the message <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burlingtonelectric.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"tag\">reads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>No evidence of a Russian trace has been released either. Eventually, the Washington Post issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/russian-hackers-penetrated-us-electricity-grid-through-a-utility-in-vermont\/2016\/12\/30\/8fc90cc4-ceec-11e6-b8a2-8c2a61b0436f_story.html?utm_term=.1f905962240f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"tag\">correction<\/a>\u00a0to its article. <em>\u201cAn earlier version of this story incorrectly said that Russian hackers had penetrated the US electric grid. Authorities say there is no indication of that so far,\u201d<\/em> the statement said. The headline, blatantly accusing <em>\u201cRussian hackers\u201d<\/em> of breaching the US power grid, remains, though.<\/p>\n<p>Glen Greenwald, a prominent US journalist who was among those breaking the story on Edward Snowden\u2019s leaks on the NSA spying scandal, said the case suits America\u2019s anti-Russian agenda. <em>\u201cIt matters even more because it reflects the deeply irrational and ever-spiraling fever that is being cultivated in US political discourse and culture about the threat posed by Moscow,\u201d<\/em> Greenwald <a href=\"http:\/\/theintercept.com\/2016\/12\/31\/russia-hysteria-infects-washpost-again-false-story-about-hacking-u-s-electric-grid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"tag\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/twitter.com\/TheXclass\/status\/815553153496182784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, people on social media teamed up in slamming the material by the Washington Post as another instance of <em>\u201cfake news.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The WaPo caught promoting another fake news story. On November 24, an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/russian-propaganda-effort-helped-spread-fake-news-during-election-experts-say\/2016\/11\/24\/793903b6-8a40-4ca9-b712-716af66098fe_story.html?utm_term=.920a0ab5f501\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"tag\">article<\/a>\u00a0by the newspaper alleged that Russia is in fact behind a massive spread of\u00a0<em>\u201cfake news<\/em>\u201d which affected the US presidential campaign in November last year.<\/p>\n<p>One of the experts cited by the newspaper was a group called PropOrNot, which\u00a0<em>\u201cidentified\u201d<\/em>\u00a0over 200 websites as spreading Russian propaganda. Yet the article drew serious criticism from people on social media as well as journalists over PropOrNot&#8217;s own dubious credentials.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\"><a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/op-edge\/365454-cyber-attacks-russia-us-clinton\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"http:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/2016.11\/thumbnail\/581dd86cc36188ea0d8b45f3.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Pawel Kopczynski \" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\"><\/div>\n<h4 class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\"><a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/op-edge\/365454-cyber-attacks-russia-us-clinton\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"read-more__footer\">US threats of cyber-attacks against Russia \u2018double bluff &amp; saber-rattling\u2019<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>_<br \/>\nIn return, the Washington Post issued a lengthy editor\u2019s note, saying that some of the sites included by PropOrNot\u00a0<em>\u201chave publicly challenged the group\u2019s methodology and conclusions.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0The group later deleted them and Washington Post on its part said that does not\u00a0<em>\u201cvouch for the validity of PropOrNot\u2019s findings.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In October, the US officially accused Russia of hacking computers of individuals and organizations of the Democratic campaign ahead of the US elections. Moscow rebuffed the accusation as \u201cnonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the victory of the Republican candidate Donald Trump, the Washington Post, citing a CIA report,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/obama-orders-review-of-russian-hacking-during-presidential-campaign\/2016\/12\/09\/31d6b300-be2a-11e6-94ac-3d324840106c_story.html?utm_term=.da273c872523\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"tag\">said<\/a>\u00a0that Moscow specifically helped Trump to get into the White House.<\/p>\n<p>The President-elect\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2016\/12\/11\/trump-claims-russian-interference-in-2016-race-ridiculous-dems-making-excuses.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"tag\">called<\/a>\u00a0the allegations\u00a0<em>\u201cridiculous\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and labeled them yet\u00a0<em>\u201canother excuse\u201d<\/em>\u00a0by the Democrats for the loss of Hillary Clinton. \u00a0Speaking to RT, a former member of the British MI5 intelligence agency, Annie Machon, said that rolling out with a bright headline and later issuing a correction is part of the Washington Post\u2019s tactics.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTime after time after time, we are seeing this fake news coming out in the Washington Post,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she said.\u00a0<em>\u201cAnd every time they put these fake stories out they have to put [out] a disclaimer afterwards.
