{"id":61571,"date":"2016-12-28T08:00:48","date_gmt":"2016-12-28T12:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=61571"},"modified":"2016-12-28T08:00:48","modified_gmt":"2016-12-28T12:00:48","slug":"galaxy-grows-dimmer-with-carrie-fishers-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=61571","title":{"rendered":"Galaxy grows dimmer with Carrie Fisher\u2019s death"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"author-byline\">\n<p class=\"byline\">By Laura Italiano and Kate Sheehy<br \/>\nPage Six<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStar Wars\u201d actress <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/tag\/carrie-fisher\/\">Carrie Fisher<\/a>, the daughter of Hollywood royalty who soared to fame as a wise-cracking intergalactic princess, died Tuesday, four days after suffering a massive heart attack.<\/p>\n<p>Fisher, 60, never regained consciousness after <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/2016\/12\/23\/carrie-fisher-suffers-massive-heart-attack-on-airplane\/\">going into cardiac arrest aboard a plane<\/a> around noon Friday while traveling from London to Los Angeles to promote her latest memoir.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother, Carrie Fisher, passed away at 8:55 this morning,\u201d Fisher\u2019s family spokesman, Simon Halls, said in a statement Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Fisher\u2019s actress mother, <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/tag\/debbie-reynolds\/\">Debbie Reynolds<\/a>, 84, called her daughter \u201cbeloved and amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am grateful for your thoughts and prayers that are now guiding her to her next stop. Love, Carrie\u2019s Mother,\u201d Reynolds wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Fisher was most famous for her elaborately coiffed role as Princess Leia Organa in the sci-fi movie series.<\/p>\n<p>She landed the coveted job at just 19, beating out actresses <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/tag\/jodie-foster\/\">Jodie Foster<\/a> and Amy Irving.<\/p>\n<p>But while the once-in-a-lifetime gig made her the fantasy of teenage boys and sci-fi geeks everywhere, it also proved to be a burden, Fisher frequently lamented.<\/p>\n<p>She would go on to write critically acclaimed books, do star turns in hit movies and marry a music legend, but \u201cPrincess Leia will be on my tombstone,\u2019\u2019 Fisher said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForty-three years ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/tag\/george-lucas\/\">George Lucas<\/a> ruined my life. I had to sit very straight because I couldn\u2019t have lines on my sides, like little creases. No creases were allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, after years of rumors, Fisher <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/2016\/11\/15\/carrie-fisher-i-slept-with-harrison-ford\/\">finally admitted to sleeping with married co-star<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/tag\/harrison-ford\/\">Harrison Ford<\/a> during the filming of the 1977 \u201dStar Wars\u2019\u2019 blockbuster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGod, he was just so handsome,\u201d Fisher dished in \u201cThe Princess Diarist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. No, more than that. In between, Fisher became engaged \u2014 then un-engaged \u2014 to comedian <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/tag\/dan-aykroyd\/\">Dan Aykroyd<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere there should be a flower and a gardener, we were two flowers. In the bright sun. Wilting,\u201d Carrie once said of her relationship with Simon.<\/p>\n<p>Simon would write several song lyrics with Fisher in mind, including these from his 1986 tune \u201cGraceland\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cShe comes back to tell me she\u2019s gone,<br \/>\n\u201cAs if I didn\u2019t know that,<br \/>\n\u201cAs if I didn\u2019t know my own bed,<br \/>\n\u201cAs if I\u2019d never noticed,<br \/>\n\u201cThe way she brushed her hair from her forehead.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fisher once said, \u201cI\u2019m not as cooperative as you might want a woman to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery man, I think, or at least the ones I end up finding, there\u2019s no such thing as a consort. All men are kings. That was my little discovery . . . I really thought men\u2019s fantasy is to have an intellectual geisha. So what I did was I learned to cook, and I took a massage course. But that\u2019s not all of it. You have to also agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fisher bore her only child, Billie, with her second husband, Hollywood agent Bryan Lourd \u2014 who left her after three years of marriage for another man.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the \u201cStar Wars\u2019\u2019 franchise, Fisher was known for her roles in everything from flicks such as \u201cWhen Harry Met Sally\u2019\u2019 to satirical appearances in TV\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/tag\/sex-and-the-city\/\">Sex and the City<\/a>\u2019\u2019 and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/tag\/the-big-bang-theory\/\">The Big Bang Theory<\/a>.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Fisher also was a prolific writer, plumbing her struggles as a celebrity daughter, sci-fi icon and against-the-odds survivor in sassy, salacious memoirs and semi-autobiographical novels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t all sweetness and light sabers,\u201d she quipped of her life in her 2011 memoir, \u201cShockaholic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her 1987 roman \u00e0 clef, \u201cPostcards From the Edge,\u201d was a critical success, later adapted into a movie by the same name and starring <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/tag\/meryl-streep\/\">Meryl Streep<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/tag\/shirley-maclaine\/\">Shirley MacLaine<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/tag\/dennis-quaid\/\">Dennis Quaid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this excerpt, the book\u2019s main character, Suzanne, talks about a recent rehab stay:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMom brought me some peanut butter cookies and a biography of Judy Garland. She told me she thought my problem was that I was too impatient, my fuse was too short, that I was only interested in instant gratification. I said, \u2018Instant gratification takes too long.\u2019 \u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But long before Fisher began writing \u2014 or even blasting away at stormtroopers \u2014 she was already in the public eye as the daughter of 1950s superstars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to share her, and I didn\u2019t like that,\u201d Fisher told NPR last month of her movie-star mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we went out, people sort of walked over me to get to her, and no, I didn\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her father was also a star crooner. Her parents divorced in 1959, when Fisher was just 18 months old.<\/p>\n<p>Her father had hopped into bed with a newly widowed <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/tag\/elizabeth-taylor\/\">Elizabeth Taylor<\/a>, and decided to stay there, creating a major Hollywood scandal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am truly a product of Hollywood in-breeding. When two celebrities mate, someone like me is the result,\u201d Fisher said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that seeing Hollywood so up close, including through her parents\u2019 eyes, was unnerving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir bright, white-hot star of celebrity was slowly dimming and fading and cooling. It scared me,\u2019\u2019 she said. \u201cI saw what it did to them. It hurt them.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote right\"><p>I am truly a product of Hollywood in-breeding. When two celebrities mate, someone like me is the result.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"attribution\">\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Carrie Fisher<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As she grew up, her father never visited, and her mom took to drink, Fisher complained.<\/p>\n<p>It was not a conventional family, even by celebrity standards, Fisher said. The year she turned 15, her mom gave her and her grandmother matching vibrators for Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs unusual as a gift like this sounds, you have to admit that they are ideal stocking stuffers,\u201d Fisher quipped in her tome \u201cWishful Drinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I have to admit, I enjoyed mine, but my grandmother refused to use hers,\u201d Fisher said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was concerned that it would short-circuit her pacemaker. She said that she had gone this long without an orgasm; she might as well go the whole way. (And that pacemaker, by the way, was later recalled).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fisher started smoking pot at age 13. I\u2019ve been there for a couple of people when they were dying; it didn\u2019t look like fun. But if I was gonna do it, I\u2019d want someone like me around. And I will be there!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was clear where she got her wit from.<\/p>\n<p>After Fisher revealed that she and Ford had been an item, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/DebbieReynolds1\/status\/798961451981422592\">her mother, Reynolds, tweeted<\/a>, \u201cWhy all the fuss about Carrie\u2019s admitting she had an affair with Harrison Ford?
