Today, Salon <\/em>gave a platform to a self-confessed pedophile to explain his urges in sympathetic terms. \u201cI\u2019m a Pedophile, But Not A Monster<\/a>\u201d\u00a0reads the headline. It\u2019s a long, self-pitying screed that ends with a call to be \u201cunderstanding and supportive\u201d of adults who crave sexual intimacy with children.<\/h2>\nby<\/span> MILO<\/a><\/p>\nForgive me if I\u2019m not first to start the standing ovation. In fact I\u2019m pretty sure most people will find the\u00a0existence on\u00a0Salon<\/em>\u2019s website of this post both shocking and distasteful.<\/p>\nThe timing of Nickerson\u2019s post, barely a\u00a0week after multiple high-profile progressives rallied around<\/a>\u00a0progressive activist\u00a0Sarah Nyberg<\/a>, couldn\u2019t be more suspect.\u00a0Over the past two weeks, an alarming number of left-leaning commentators have rallied around<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0self-confessed transsexual pedophile<\/a> and progressive activist who defended white nationalism<\/a>.<\/p>\nIn other words, progressives who got fired\u00a0up about whether green and purple was a \u201crapey\u201d colour scheme<\/a> were suddenly fine with discussion\u00a0of\u00a0incestuous pedophilia\u00a0from a 22-year-old in a chat room full of teenagers. It has been a somewhat grotesque spectacle to watch.<\/p>\nBut these two incidents are merely\u00a0just the latest in a disturbing trend of pedophilia activism on the Left, which has gone out on a limb time and time again to normalise child abuse.\u00a0From the 1970s to the present day, organised pedophilia has been a recurring problem for\u00a0the supposedly progressive movement.<\/p>\n
The North American Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) had\u00a0early support from Allen Ginsberg<\/a>.\u00a0In the UK, the Pedophile Information Exchange (PIE) sought acceptance on the Left by affiliating itself with the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL), then run by prominent\u00a0Left-wingers. Leading members of the Labour party, including Patricia Hewitt and Harriet Harman, were tarnished by their association with PIE<\/a>,\u00a0but many of them remain in positions of power in the Labour party.<\/p>\n<\/div>\nThere are plenty of decent left-wingers who are horrified by the attempts of pedophiles to piggyback on their movement, of course. In the aftermath of the Jimmy Savile scandal in the UK, the Guardian <\/em>published a feature<\/a> carrying the disturbing claim that there is \u201cnot even a full academic consensus on whether consensual paedophilic relations necessarily cause\u00a0harm.\u201d Even left-wing comedy websites<\/a> are complaining about society\u2019s \u201cmisunderstanding\u201d of pedophiles, and their writers post pictures of their own children to pedophiles<\/a> in \u201csupport\u201d when the self-confessed perverts are outed.<\/p>\nWhat\u2019s happening here? Why are defences of pedophilia so rampant on the Left?\u00a0And why are pedophiles so attracted to the progressive movement, as opposed to conservatism, libertarianism, or even anarcho-capitalism?<\/p>\n
The most likely answer may\u00a0be difficult for left-leaning readers to accept.\u00a0For decades, moral relativism has underpinned radical left-wing thought. This is particularly clear when we look\u00a0at how abuses in Muslim communities are\u00a0treated. When the Conservative government in Canada labeled female genital mutilation and forced marriages as \u201cbarbaric cultural practices,\u201d they were criticised\u00a0by leading Canadian leftists<\/a>.<\/p>\nSee also: the breeziness with which feminists ignore abuses against women all across the Muslim world, and the timidity of gay rights campaigners to challenge Muslims on gay rights. Not Islamists, you understand, but mainstream Islamic society, in which simply being gay can get you killed in a dozen countries or more. Oh, and Rotherham, where moral relativism and the fear of being seen as \u201cracist\u201d got 1,200 white girls raped<\/a>.<\/p>\nIn the U.S, where a left-wing administration is in charge, relativism has even seeped into the military. As was recently reported, American soldiers in Afghanistan are now being instructed to ignore the sexual abuse of boys by Afghan allies.<\/a> Campaigners against religious barbarism like the UK\u2019s National Secular Society have\u00a0condemned the relativism<\/a>\u00a0at the heart of radical left-wing identity politics, but to no avail.<\/p>\nIt\u2019s easy to see why pedophile activists would be attracted to a movement that makes excuses for practices like FGM. If the mutilation of little girls can be defended on the grounds of cultural relativism \u2014 \u201cthat\u2019s just how they are\u201d \u2014 what can\u2019t be defended?<\/p>\n
Anarcho-capitalists and libertarians may wish to dismantle many social and legal checks on personal behaviour, but they draw a hard line around behaviour that harms or violates the rights of others. Horrifyingly, there are signs of a\u00a0new pedophile acceptance movement forming on the Left. Just as Allen West warned,<\/a> the gay rights movement is being used as a template. First comes the argument that pedophiles are just \u201cborn that way,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0absolving them of any moral responsibility for their desires.\u00a0Then comes the argument that pedophiles are just normal people<\/a>, like the rest of us, but somehow impoverished or victimised by their own condition.<\/p>\nInevitably, our society\u2019s current ostracisation of pedophiles will be portrayed as an injustice: an oppression from which pedophiles must be liberated, or for which they deserve our sympathy. And woe to the oppressors! Quietly, in progressive columns and academies around the world, progressives are losing their footing and sliding down that\u00a0slippery slope. Publications like\u00a0Salon<\/em> are\u00a0abetting the turpitude.<\/p>\n\u201cAcceptance\u201d and relativism are\u00a0essential tools of the partisan Left, which\u00a0abandons all sense of moral consistency when one of its\u00a0own is accused. The furious defence of Sarah Nyberg\u00a0was redolent\u00a0of the Lena Dunham scandal, in which\u00a0similarly bizarre and disturbing revelations about Dunham\u2019s relationship with her sister\u00a0were defended to the hilt by media luvvies<\/a>.<\/p>\nYou know, a bit like how the BBC covered up for Savile for all those years. Just about the only kiddy-diddlers leftists don\u2019t stick up for are Catholic priests, for reasons best known to themselves.<\/p>\n
Compare this to conservative molester Josh Duggar, who can only muster support from has-beens like Mike Huckabee<\/a>. The rest of the conservative movement, from National Review<\/a><\/em> to Breitbart<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0were unequivocal in their condemnation of the Duggars. But for the hysterical defenders of Nyberg and Dunham, principle \u2014 not to mention the safety of children \u2014\u00a0can\u2019t be allowed to come before politics.<\/p>\nAggressive public displays of virtue\u00a0are where\u00a0the morally deplorable\u00a0hide<\/a>.\u00a0The trend of social justice warriors with closets full of skeletons is common enough to be a meme at this point. It might even be<\/a> part of the job description<\/a>. Whether by cleansing progressives of\u00a0sin through virtue signalling, or simply enabling them to hide in plain sight,\u00a0slacktivism provides a welcoming environment for scammers and the unsavoury, which is why progressives protect their own: they know it could be any of them next.<\/p>\nThe one silver lining is that such people are set to\u00a0lose the support of the centre.
