Now, thanks to a report by the UK\u2019s Daily Mail<\/em>, we know Snopes not only peddles CIA propaganda, it is a sleazy outfit, run by an embezzler, a former hooker\/porn star, and a dominatrix.<\/p>\n Reporting for Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>, Dec. 21, 2016, Alana Goodman points out that Snopes.com will benefit from Facebook<\/em> using the site as an arbiter of truth by determining what\u2019s \u201cfake news.\u201d Now a DailyMail.com investigation has exposed Snopes.com\u2019s sleazy underbelly.<\/p>\n Owner and CEO David Mikkelson<\/strong> is accused by his former wife and Snopes<\/em>\u2018 co-founder, Barbara Mikkelson, of embezzlement \u2014 using company money for prostitutes. <\/strong><\/p>\n The Mikkelsons founded Snopes<\/em> in 1995. In 2015, their marriage ended in divorce, but both stayed on as co-owners of Snopes<\/em>, which is registered under its legal name of Bardav, Inc. and were its sole board members. In the time since the couple split, David has run the company\u2019s day-to-day operations, and authored a number of Snopes<\/em>\u2018 \u201cfact checks\u201d.<\/p>\n Despite their divorce, the Mikkelsons are embroiled in a bitter and lengthy legal dispute, accusing each other of financial impropriety.<\/p>\n Barbara accuses David of embezzlement and \u201cboondoggling\u201d tax arrangements; David says Barbara took millions from their joint accounts and bought property in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n In court filings, Barbara, 57, accuses David, 56, of \u201craiding the corporate business Bardav bank account for his personal use and attorney fees\u201d without consulting her:<\/p>\n Snopes\u2019 \u201cadministrative assistant\u201d is Elyssa Young<\/strong>, 47, whom David Mikkelson married last month in Washington state.<\/p>\n Young is a long-time \u201cescort\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 a euphemism for call girl or prostitute \u2014 and porn star who has worked for decades under the name \u201cErin O\u2019Bryn\u201d.<\/strong> Although Young lists her job as \u201cadministrative assistant at Snopes\u201d on LinkedIn<\/em>, her escort website<\/strong>s and Twitter<\/em> accounts still<\/strong> appear to be active.<\/strong> Online reviews suggest that she was working in Las Vegas as an escort as recently as March 2015.<\/p>\n On her escort website, Young calls herself \u201can elite and discreet companion\u201d who \u201cunderstands that while pleasure and passion may be explored in the bedroom, it is hardly the only place. I only accept a very limited number of new lovers because I\u2019m only seeking long term engagements.\u201d For those \u201clong term engagements,\u201d Young request \u201cdonation for my time, companionship, and entertainment\u201d \u2014 \u201cnon-negotiable\u201d rates of $1,200 for a minimum four hours and $5,000 for 24 hours.<\/p>\n Although the Mikkelsons have denied that Snopes is politically partisan, David\u2019s new wife has a background in politics. In 2004 in Hawaii, Elyssa Young ran for U.S. Congress as a Libertarian, during which she handed out \u2018Re-Defeat Bush\u2019 cards and condoms stamped with the slogan \u201cDon\u2019t get screwed again\u201d. She wrote on her campaign website: \u201cLet\u2019s face it, I am an unlikely candidate. I fully admit that I am a courtesan.\u201d In the end she pulled in 3% of the vote, losing the seat to Democratic incumbent Neil Abercrombie<\/a> \u2014 a pal of Obama who, in 2011, admitted he couldn\u2019t find Obama\u2019s long-form birth certificate.
